Trying to find out more about Thomas Connor, drowned Mar 20,1865

Kerry

I am trying to further identify the Thomas Connor in this linked article. What I know from this article is:

  • Thomas was a respected harbor pilot
  • Thomas lived halfway between Kilfenora and Fenit, County Kerry
  • Thomas had a brother Charles
  • Thomas was married and had other family members in the area
  • Thomas drowned trying to save his boat during a particularly bad storm, anchored about 800 yards out from halfway between Kilfenora and Fenit, County Kerry
  • Thomas's brother Charles survived the incident

Specifically, I'd like to know what family he was part of and identify his parents & spouse.

Perhaps long-shot, but worth asking!

Thank you,

Gail

Gail,

To help volunteers, do you have the name of his wife, his approximate age & marriage? Anything about Charles? Did he have children, when?

Hi Mary,

No, I'm sorry, I do not. He is just coincidentally in the same location as two different Thomas O'Connors - and, I'm wondering if this Thomas might be one or the other, or perhaps if all three are in fact the same person.

One is Thomas O'Connor, son of Thomas O'Connor & Catherine Murphy. Lived in/around the Kilfenora area and was probably born in the late 1820s/early 1830s. The family pattern is that the oldest kids were baptized at Tralee Parish and the younger kids were baptized at Ardfert Parish as they moved out of Tralee. This Thomas is not supposed to have married and is supposed to have died in 1866. This Thomas did have a younger brother Charles, born 1846 in Ballymakegoge, baptized at Ardfert Parish. This Charles immigrated to the US in the 1880s and married there. I have this family fairly well researched, however I haven't found a notice or death record for him.

The other is a Thomas O'Connor, married to a Bridget Flaherty and had at least two sons - a Thomas O'Connor, born in 1860, Liscahane and another John O'Connor, born 1864 in Tawlaght. I've not found any more information on this couple/family other than the two baptism records.

I do realize there are a lot of Thomas Connor/O'Connor's - but, thought it worth trying to confirm these are separate & distinct people.

Thanks,

Gail

Gail,

I found these Thomas Sullivan marriage records on Irishgenealogy. Causeway might be too far north. Without more info on when Thomas was born and possibly married, it is difficult to determine the correct Thomas.

Hi Mary,

Thank you so much. I think however you are correct. Unless I can find more information about the Thomas Connor who drowned in 1865, it will be impossible to match him up with other Thomas Connors in the area. I do wish his death record was available, or the article said a bit more about him, or I could find an article about the funeral where they may have listed the mourners! I'll keep searching. Who knows, I might get lucky!

Thank you again,

Gail

Death record found, see attached. Not much new other than Thomas was 30 years old when he died.  As mentioned in the newspaper article Thomas was married and his brother Charles was present at his drowning which occurred in East Tawlaght.
