Thomas O'Connor & Bridget Flaherty - tracking them down

KerryArdfert (Kerry)

I have found reference to Thomas O'Connor and Bridget Flaherty within Ardfert Parish, County Kerry at the baptism of two of their children - Thomas in 1860, "of" Liscahane and John in 1864, "of" Tawlaght. (see attached).

(Please note that Irish Genealogy has indexed O'Connor as "O" and FindMyPast indexed Flaherty as "Hohuter"! )

I have been searching extensively (IrishGenealogy and Irish Newspaper Archives) with no luck more information about Thomas & Bridget. I would love to find any hints/clues/direction regarding the bullet below or anything else about this couple/family.

  • Birth/Baptism of two additional children, specifically Mary Agnes O'Connor (born March 27, 1867, Ireland as per her Connecticut death certificate and immigrated to USA in 1880s) and a Catherine O'Connor (born between 1862-1868 as per US Census information and immigrated to USA in 1880s)

Thank you,

Gail

Do you have any documents giving names of parents of Mary A. and Catherine? I'm wondering if Bridget died and Thomas remarried?

Did Catherine and Mary A. marry? If so, to whom, and where were they living?

Thanks.

Hi Patricia.

Thanks for asking.  The answer is yes, but in the USA.

Mary A.went to Waterbury, Connecticut and married William Dillon (from County Kerry) in 1886. Her 1946 death record is the one that identifies her parents as Thomas O'Connor and Bridget Flaherty. Catherine is only known from Mary's obituary which indicates Mary was survived by her sister Catherine Quinlan in Chicago. We are trying to confirm whether a Catherine O'Connor that married an Edward Quinlan in 1887 might be the right Catherine. Her death record did not help; the marriage certificate has been ordered.

An unconfirmed story with no details and no idea of its merit, from the descendants of Mary, is that they had some kind of connection to Northern Ireland. We have not made any connection with Northern Ireland in the research thus far.

Hi GD, You probably know that info on death certificates is not always reliable. The informant may be misinformed, confused, upset, grieving. The person writing down the information might make mistakes.  This said, I found a Mary Agnes O'Connor born in Limerick on 27 March...in 1869, as follows.

Name:          Mary Agnes O'Connor

Date of Birth:         27-Mar-1869

 Registration Date:  22-Apr-1869

Address:       Arthur's Quay

Parish/District:         LIMERICK NO. 3

Gender:        Female

County          Co. Limerick

Denomination:         Civil Record

Father:         Patrick O'Connor

Mother:         Mary Crowe

Occupation:  Painter

Thanks Patricia,

Thank you for the assist and I will keep that in mind. Interesting that the month/day/and given names match our information.

And, yes, I know the informant provided information is not primary source and must be verified. I was looking for a James O'Connor & Catherine Murphy for YEARS and finally was able to show that Thomas O'Connor & Catherine Murphy were my 3rd great grandparents!

I have a DNA match with a descendant of Mary Agnes O'Connor Dillon (parents listed as Thomas O'Connor & Bridget Flaherty). I do have two baptism records which show at least there is a couple by the names Thomas O'Connor & Bridget Flaherty in the right timeframe. My O'Connors are from Tralee and then moved out to Ballymakegoge & Kilfenora within Ardfert Parish. The Thomas O'Connor & Bridget Flaherty I found in Tawlaght and Liscahane in 1860 and 1864, which is very close by. Coincidentally, my 2nd great grandmother's 1860 marriage record in Ardfert Parish has a witness, Thomas O'Connor from Liscahane, which is another potential overlap.  A lot of speculation here, but there are interesting connections.  I'm trying hard not to make the people fit my scenario without sufficient proof but this particular couple is intriguing.

I'm hopeful the marriage record of Catherine in Chicago will match up to the data on Mary Agnes's death record which should make us a bit more confident a) that we have the right Catherine, and b) that we have the parents' names right.  And, in the meantime I"ll take a look at Mary Agnes O'Connor to see if she might fit into this family tree.

Thank you so much for all your help & thinking outside the box. It is much appreciated.
