Looking for where my grandfather, Patrick Healy, was born and the names of his parents (my great grandparents)

Patrick was born in March 1875. I haven't been able to locate where he was born. The information I have is that he emigrated from Queenstown/Cohb leaving on June 9th and arriving in New York on June 17th, 1897 on the ship Aurania. The ship's manifest lists his last residence as "Ballylander, County Kerry". However, it appears there is no Ballylander in Co. Kerry so it may be that it should read Ballyledder which is in Co. Kerry, but I have been unable to locate him there.

Upon arrival he went to live with his uncle James Healy and his wife Bridget Clohosey Healy in Bridgeport, Connecticut and stayed there for three years. Patrick apparently moved to Hoboken, New Jersey around 1900 and married Mary Ahern who had emigrated in either 1891 or 1895. She was born in Kanturk, Co. Cork. He had his first son, James in 1904 and three other children ( Kathleen - 1906, Philip - 1909 and my father, John Patrick Healy in 1912.) Patrick died in October 1917 in Hoboken, NJ. and Mary died in 1928 in Hoboken, NJ.

I haven't been able to find their marriage record in either New Jersey or New York. It's possible they only married in a church which would explain why there don't seem to be civil records. I've searched Irishgenealogy.ie; LDS' Family Search; NationalArchives.ie and used John Grenham's book to try to locate the townland of Ballyledder.

Any help in tracing my grandparent would be appreciated. Thank you, Elizabeth

Liz,

In Ireland, they typically did not celebrate birthdays so often the birth month and year aren't 100% accurate. Perhaps you can provide more information on Patrick- when did he leave (I couldn't read year), where did he go, did he get married (who, when, where), children (names, where born, and year), where and when did he die? Have you checked his marriage and death records? Sometimes parent names are listed. Have you checked censuses? If in the US, the 1900 census sometimes included parents' names.

On RootsIreland (paid subscription) I found a record for a Patrick (not necessarily yours) baptized March 9, 1875, in Castletownroche, Cork to John Healy and Mary Redding. They were married in 1865 in Fermoy, Cork. In addition to Patrick, they had the following children- Daniel 1869, David 1871, William 1873.

You might want to check out Irishgenealogy (free site) which provides some baptism records for Kerry and Western Cork, as well as civil records starting in 1864.

Liz,

When his Uncle James got married in 1874, the marriage record identified his parents as Patrick Healy and Catherine Keogh. There was a James born in Bulgaden, Limerick in 1843. Some Ancestry trees show him born in Limerick. Siblings-Patrick 1838, Barth 1840, Maria 1844, Johanna 1845. Information from RootsIreland.

Bulgaden is north of Ballylander, Limerick. Ballyander is about 8 miles from the Cork border.

Patrick's son James became a priest. One tree had this comment. Are you familiar with Annie?

James was a Catholic Monsignor. Newly ordained in 1930, he was assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish in Elizabeth and spent time there with his aunt Annie Coakley McNamara. Later in life he served as pastor of Saint Augustine's in Union City, NJ

mtvrdk@gmail.com

On RootsIreland I found a Patrick Healy born to Patrick Healy and Bridget Hogan in Ballylander, baptized, Sept. 8, 1874.

02500/05, Ballylanders - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

Note civil record shows Glenaghhaglish, Galbally

Patrick and Bridget were married in 1873. Patrick was from Glenaghhaglish

Eileen's suggestion should be researched.

Liz,

What I presented are possibilities you probably need further research with DNA testing.

Greetings MaryTV and Eileen,

Thank you for the information you provided. I had been advised about birth dates not always being accurate ,but if what I found in the available census data, ship manifests and death certificate state the same particular date, I'm inclined to think the birthdate is, if not completely accurate, it is at least close within a matter of years. Does this seem reasonable? t

I do have the marriage record from NY City for his uncle, James Healy, but have not been able so far to find any information regarding either his parents, Patrick Healy or Catherine Keogh and no definitive info on Bridget Clohosey's parents either.

Mary you wrote: "Patrick's son James became a priest. One tree had this comment. Are you familiar with Annie?James was a Catholic Monsignor. Newly ordained in 1930, he was assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish in Elizabeth and spent time there with his aunt Annie Coakley McNamara."  Yes, I knew my uncle, we weren't close but spent some time together when I was a child; however, I have never heard of this person Annie Coakley McNamara. Would you be able to provide the tree location of where you found this information?

Kind regards,

Liz

Are you comfortable with the birth record I found for Patrick's Uncle James in Limerick? It was the only birth record I found with Patrick Healy and Catherine Keogh as parents.

mtvrdk@gmail.com

Liz,

I just found the info I shared on Annie. If James was born in 1904 and Annie was born in 1893 and last name was Coakley, I don't see her being an Aunt, perhaps a cousin?

The owner of the tree identifies Hanora Healy as her mother (1863, Cork). Her parents were James Healy and Hanora McCarthy. I am concerned the tree's owner has combined two different families. Not sure how the story about Annie and James is supported.

Hi Mary,

Yes, this is my grandfather and great-uncle was James. I did see this in the 1920 census; she apparently owned a pub that Patrick worked in. I haven't been able to find out much else about James or Bridget other than the marriage cert and their death certs. I thought if I could locate where James came from that would possibly answer my question about where my grandfather came from.

I haven't been able to find information about Nicholas Clohosey and Margaret Bryne (I believe her name was Byrne). I will go tomorrow to a Family Search center as i believe they have access to a lot more information and genealogy services. In particular, I have a reference to some microfilm they may have access to onsite.

Thank you again.

Hi Mary,

You asked if I was comfortable with this info: "There was a James born in Bulgaden, Limerick in 1843. Some Ancestry trees show him born in Limerick." I don't think this would be my great-uncle. The disparity between what was recorded on the ship registers (1857) and the 1880 U.S. Census say seems too great. What do you think?

I agree with you about Annie Coakley McNamara likely being not an aunt but a cousin (if there was a relationship at at all, perhaps she was a parishioner and they were good friends?)

Liz_H

Liz,

James baptized in Bulgaden in 1843, passenger list (1873-25=48), marriage 1845, 1880 census 1850, death record 1848. It is not unusual for birth years to be 10 years apart. Birthdays weren't celebrated so most people did not know their true birth year.

Interesting they were travelling as married in 1873. They got married in NY in 1874.

I found this record on RootsIreland. If James was a laborer, perhaps he travelled to Kilkenny. Nicholas and Margaret were married in 1829.

Thank you Mary. Will let you know what I discover at Family Search. Had to postpone my trip by a day and will go tomorrow. Also will subscribe to RootsIreland.ie -- seems to be very good. Thinking about the DNA testing too.
