John McCarthy~ county Kerry

Kerry

I am looking for more information on my great great grandfather John McCarthy. He was born on June 24th 1842 in Killarney, county Kerry I believe. His father's name we think is Hugh, on his death certificate it lists a "H McCarthy" for his father. Mother could be Mary. He married Sarah Heaverin, born in Ireland in 1846. They married in Washington D.C. on Dec. 30, 1865. He was in the Civil War from 1861-1865, so I am assuming that he immigrated to America around 1860. John & Sarah had nine children. Mary Agnes, Alexander J., John Jr., Sarah Elizabeth, Charles Francis, William, Edward Henry, Frederick J., Frank M., Eugene Thomas and my great grandfather Vincent Samuel. They had their oldest Mary Agnes in Washington D.C. in 1867. The rest of the children were born in Minnesota. They moved to Brainerd, Minnesota in 1871. John died on November 30, 1911 in Brainerd, Minnesota. Sarah died on April 30, 1888. I am trying to find more information about his life in Ireland and his family there. With a name like John McCarthy it has been difficult finding any records from Ireland that I can say for sure are my John McCarthy. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were no John McCarthy baptismal records in Killarney RC parish in 1842.There were records in 1841 and 1843 and other years but not 1842.

I searched for any John McCarthy baptismal records in Co. Kerry with a father's name starting with and H and there were no records in the 1840s.

I went a step further and there were no McCarthy baptismal records in Killarney with a father with a first name starting with an H.

I note that the oldest son was Alexander but I did not find any McCarthy baptismal records with father Alexander in Killarney.

Many immigrants used the nearest big town when a clerk or other official asked where they were from so it is possible that your John  was from a parish near Killarney that does not have any records back to 1842.

Do you have any more clues?

Following on Roger's post, it would be logical if John's father was named Alexander.  His first son was called Alexander; the Irish generally named the first son after the paternal grandfather.

I noted that none of John's children had a name beginning with H.  Maybe you could post the record that shows the H? Old handwriting is often hard to decipher.

The only document have recently acquired is a certified death certificate for John McCarthy. On it it has "H McCarthy" as his father.
