connecting Jeremiah O'Donoghue, from Cahersiveen, County Kerry, to his birth family

Kerry

Hi there,

I've recently found out slightly more about my 2nd great grandfather and am hoping someone might help me connect him with his birth family. Here is what I know:

1) my 2nd great grandfather, Jeremiah O'Donoghue was from Cahersiveen, born between 1833-1840

2) he was a shoe and boot maker

3) he had at least three siblings: Patrick, Daniel, and an unnamed sister. At least Daniel was still living in Cahersiveen in 1899.

4) his brother Patrick had a son John, born about 1875 in Cahersiveen, that immigrated to NYC in 1888 and was there in the late 1890s where he was known as John Donohue

5) his unnamed sister had a daughter Mary O'Sullivan, born about 1856 in Cahersiveen, that married a John Coulen (my best interpretation on the spelling), and was in NYC by 1899.

6) he had a cousin (from Cahersiveen), Mary Sullivan, maiden name O'Connor, although I'm not sure of the exact familial connection, living in NYC by 1899

7) Jeremiah married Hannah O'Connor (daughter of Thomas O'Connor & Catherine Murphy) in 1860 (Ardfert Parish; witnesses Thomas O'Connor & Patrick Higgins)

8) Jeremiah & Hannah lived in Cahersiveen for a few years and had a daughter in 1864, baptized in Ardfert Parish. Jeremiah's niece Mary lived with them for a couple of years

9) Jeremiah & Hannah immigrated to the USA about 1864

10) Jeremiah was in the US Navy & Civil War between 1864-1865

11) he was a shoe & boot maker in the USA and also applied for a military pension in 1890

11) Jeremiah died in 1897 in Brooklyn, New York

12) his surname was O'Donoghue in Ireland, morphed to Donoghue in the USA and his children's surnames morphed to Donohue

Other than his marriage record however, I have no other Ireland based records to tie him to. Nor do I have a specific family in Cahersiveen to connect him with.

Thank you,

Gail

Thanks Patricia - very interesting & definitely overlaps with the timeframe; general location; and, name of at least one brother and existence of a sister.

The location is not perfectly matching. It is possible that after the kids were born the family moved to Cahirciveen and associated with that location from that point on; but, his wife & friends repeatedly identify/associate Jeremiah with Cahirciveen. "he was born & raised in Cahirciveen", "we went to school together in Cahirciveen", "his brother Daniel still lives in Cahirciveen", "we were both raised in Cahirciveen", etc.

What do you think?

I did find more more clue as well (the widow's pension file has a ton of information) - the maiden name of his niece Mary was O'Sullivan (although I'm not 100% convinced I have the spelling of her married name transcribed correctly).

Thanks so much.

When and where was Mary O'Sullivan 1856 married? Did record identify parent?

Hi Mary,

Thank you - I'll take a closer look at the records you shared. I don't have a marriage record for Mary O'Sullivan 1856 yet.  In 1899 she writes she came to the USA 23 years previously and had always lived in the city (New York) which would make it about 1876. If I'm reading it correctly she says she stayed with her uncle before her marriage, both in Ireland and in NYC, so my thought is that she married in NYC.
