Catharine Keliher

Kerry

Hi, my great grandmother Catharine Keliher was born in Kerry in about 1830 married my great grandfather John Sullivan of Gurthinaden Townland in Kilnamartyra, Cork in Detroit 1855 and died in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1871.  Her parents were Jeremiah Keliher and Mary Woods, from Detroit church records for marriage and children's birth.  I have no other information on her but believe her and John may have been cousins as I can not link any dna matches to her but think she may possibly be from Kilgarvan area.

Mark,

I looked on two sites - Roots Ireland & irishgenealogy.ie - for Catharine's baptism to parents Jeremiah & Mary over a twenty year period in all of Kerry, but did not find a record. There are two possible parents for John Sullivan from the Kilnamartyra parish (again, over a 20 year period), and they are:

John Sullivan, 1 Jun 1830, parents - Denis Sullivan & Joan Casey, RC parish Kilnamartyra

John Sullivan, 1 Oct 1830, parents - Owen Sullivan & Julia Mynihan, RC parish Kilnamartrya

Are you speculating that they are first cousins? The above surnames for all the parties demonstrate that cannot be the case.

Where did you find the baptism record for Catharine?

Regards,

Carolyn

The official spelling of the Sullivan townland was Gortanaddan although there are variant spellings.. The civil parish was Kilnamartery or Kilnamartry. There was a Cornelius Sullivan in the 1851 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing living in Gortanaddan. The 1901 census shows a Cornelius Sullivan in Gortanaddan. Possibly Cornelius was a brother to John. He may also be the Cornelius listed in the Griffiths.

Hi, the modern spelling in use now is Gurthinaden but I did know of the other spelling.  Cornelius was my great great grandfather and was father to John.  I have been told he was may have been a chieftain but have no way of confirming this and am unsure what it would even entail.  He married Joan Connell from the townland next door.

The Cornelius listed in 1901 census was a cousin.  My family is still there as my third cousin lives there and also has a sister there that I did not meet.  I have researched this and been there to visit.  It is my great grandmother Catharine that is one of my brick walls.

Mark,

I thought you were searching for a baptism record for John, but you already knew his parents. Roots Ireland shows that they married 6 Feb 1812, and the witnesses were Denis Murphy and William Hurlehy.

You might already know his siblings, but here they are in case you don't: Jeremiah, 1813; Mary, 1815; Denis, 1817; Patrick, 1822; Ellen, 1825; Ann, 1828; and Cornelius, 1831.

Regards,

Carolyn

His brother Cornelius is well researched, I know 4 of his great grandchildren and have met 5 of them so far as they have their DNA on Ancestry.  I only put his info in for information, it is Catharine Keliher that I am unable to find.
