Bartholomew O'Connor & Catherine Murphy from Cahersiveen, County Kerry

Kerry

Hello,

I have found a Bartholomew O’Connor and Catherine Murphy in Cahersiveen, County Kerry. They are likely the parents of a Mary Sullivan, nee O'Connor, who immigrated to NYC, married James Sullivan, raised a family there, and died in 1923 in the Bronx, NYC. Her parents are identified on her death record as Bartholomew O'Connor and Catherine Murphy. Mary is a cousin to my 2nd great grandfather, Jeremiah O'Donoghue (father might be a Michael O'Donoghue, but not yet proven), which means one of Mary's parents is a sibling to one of Jeremiah's parents. Although Mary's death record does not state where in Ireland her parents were born, I know from separate records that Mary was from Cahersiveen. I have Mary's family in the USA fairly well documented, although I do not have passenger/naturalization/marriage records yet for Mary.

I have not found a baptism record for Mary, but I have been found for the following children, all children of Bartholomew & Catherine, all from Ohermong and baptized at the Cahersiveen Parish.

      • Mary O'Connor, born about 1851, no baptism record found
      • John O’Connor, Aug 6, 1852
      • James O’Connor, Apr 5, 1856
      • Catherine O’Connor, Jul 29, 1857 (I may have found her as Catherine McCausland in Pennsylvania & New York; died 1939 in Brooklyn, parents listed as Bartholomew O'Connor and Catherine Murphy; assuming this is the same person, I do have her tree fairly well built out, although no passenger/naturalization/marriage records yet)
      • Ellen O’Connor, Aug 28, 1859
      • Honora O’Connor, Mar 27, 1863

I would like to build out this family tree a bit further if at all possible. What happened to John, James, Ellen, and Honora? And, exactly how do Bartholomew O'Connor or Catherine Murphy connect to Jeremiah O'Donoghue's parents. Is there a baptism record for Mary that I'm just not seeing?

Thank you for any help.

You may want to scan the Cahersiveen parish register which starts in 1846. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0658?locale=en It is possible that Mary's baptism did not make the register because the priest forgot to annotate the record or the entry is illegible.

Civil registration started in 1864. I screened civil marriage records from 1864-1900 did not find any good leads for the four children you listed. My assumption is that they all emigrated or died young. I did find two good leads for the deaths of Bartholomew and Catherine.

second record 1887 death Kate Connor https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1887/06209/4776146.pdf

fifth record 1888 death Batt Connor https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1888/06172/4763979.pdf

Gail,

I searched for Mary on RootsIreland (paid subscription) and Irishgenealogy and did not find a baptismal record. Looking at the register there are blurred out records. Maybe she wasn't born in Cahirciveen??

Cahirciveen, Kerry - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

I don't know how these Donoghue's connect to your Mary, but you can add to your research file.

In the 1901 Census there are Donoghues and Murphys living in Ohermong

Records from Irishgenealogy.

Mortimer was born in 1874 to Jeremiah Donoghue and Catherine Neill.

Patrick Gueran and Mary Donoghue were married in 1875, Mary was from Ohermong. Her father was Jeremiah.

Thank you MaryTV and Roger - I will digest all that you posted.

Roger - I think the death certificates are good leads.

Re: the Donoghues - my 2nd great grandfather is Jeremiah Donoghue, married in 1860 to Hannah O'Connor (from Kilfenora, just outside of Tralee). The emigrated to NYC in the 1860s. Jeremiah had a brother Patrick (died before 1899 and had at least one son John), brother Daniel (still living as of 1899), and the sister who married a Sullivan and had a daughter Mary Sullivan. I'm trying to put together the pieces, but a loose theory is emerging of possibly a father named Michael and Michael's father named Darby (or, Jeremiah) and a connection to Reenard. Still trying to find one family with all the siblings in the same household! Haven't yet seen a Mortimer in the group, but you never know!

Thank you again.

Thank you Mary.

I have not had any luck finding entries that seem to have any relevance for my research, but I haven't yet looked for Cahersiveen.

Thanks for the reminder.
