YEAR OF EMIGRATION

Family oral history says he died before Ellen, John Jr. and Patrick left for America but they all planned on going together but he died before that happened. Unsure if this is true as Ellen remarried in 1850 shortly after leaving Ireland. Unsure of when they arrived in America — cannot find records for Ellen, John Jr. or Patrick.

ANY  OTHER  DETAILS

Ellen
Ellen remarried 19 May 1850 to Robert Goggin Sr. (b. Ireland 1815 – d. 1877 McHenry Co., Illinois, USA) She moved to Minnesota after Robert Sr. died. Ellen’s parents names are possibly James Callahan 1792-1877 and Julia Clifford 1795-1883 but not certain at all.

Robert Goggin Sr.
Robert Sr. had a brother named Edward from Castlegregory married to Elizabeth McCarthy who was the daughter of Callahan/Callaghan McCarthy and Ann Moore. Elizabeth was from Chapeltown. Robert Sr. and Edward may have had a sister named Mary.

John Jr.
John Jr. married Margaret Barry 17 Jan 1857 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Woodstock, Illinois, USA. Their first son was named Daniel, second was John and third was Patrick.

1850 census said he was 15 years old living with his mother and brother and Robert Goggin Sr. John Jr. death certificate states his father’s name as John McGillicuddy.

Patrick
Patrick married Ellen Coakley 15 May 1866 in Woodstock, Illinois USA. Unsure whether or not John or Daniel  was born first/second and third was David.

Patrick’s obituary states he arrived in America with his mother, Ellen, in 1850 at 12 years old.

Their children and years they were born:

  • Nellie — 1868
  • Margaret — 1869
  • Ellen — 1871
  • Agnes — 1874
  • Daniel — 1875 ?
  • John — 1876 ?
  • David — 1879
  • Bridget — 1880
  • Hannah — 1882
  • Edward — 1886
  • Kate — 1888
  • Joseph — 1891

Thank you for your time and help with my family's brick wall.

Patricia, thank you so much for your help!

I have seen the records but am so unsure if I should be looking for the name John or Daniel. But the only records that can be found seem to be for Daniel and Ellen — not John. But then Ellen's last name is always different. Do you believe these are my people and Ellen is the same person in each record?

What/where is GURTNAG?

There was never a girl mentioned so that's a very interesting find!

Thank you again,

fartblossom39@…

Hello Missy,

Hello from New York.

I believe "Laharn" is actually Laharan (see https://www.townlands.ie/kerry/). Gurtntag may be a misspelling; again, see the townland list for Kerry.

It looks like Patrick's baptism confirms his parents' names. The "John" you saw in a death record...that was information supplied by a third party, who may have been misinformed, confused, grieving, etc. Death record info--parents' names, age, time lived in the country where the death occurred, etc.-- is often incorrect, unfortunately; sometimes the only thing you can be sure of is that someone died!

Also keep in mind that the sons named their first sons Daniel.

I hope this is helpful.

My Great grandmother is named Annie (Johana) McGillicuddy and father listed as Daniel McGillicuddy, Fisherman.

She married Thomas Conroy in Dingle on the 9th January 1897 and died in 1903 post partum in Midleton.

Not sure if there is any connection with your McGillicuddy.
