Castletownbere

Hello Jan,

If your ancestor was a soldier then his record might be found in the English National Archives which has more than 800 muster books and paylists of Irish county militia and volunteer regiments.    War Office

no.     wo13/2574 3370, dating from the end of the 18th century to the late 19th century.

Hope you find him.

regards,

Anne

Thanks a million Anne for the detailed information. I tried looking on the NA site before but I had no idea where to start. Thanks for the reference number, I will start there and hopefully he shows up.

Much appreciated,

Cheers,

Jan

Thanks a million Joan, that information is fascinating to say the least. The idea that one of my ancestors was around Bere Island with Wolfe Tone and General Hoche has me even more determined to find out more about him. I have to agree that this has to be the reason why Walter was in that part of the world in the 1820s. In order to search the military records at Kew I first need to find out what regiments were there at the time. That's another days work I suppose. Many thanks again for all your help

Thanks Joan, much appreciated !
