Glovers of Killeentierna

KerryKilleentierna (Kerry)

Hi Everyone and thanks for adding me to the group. I have traced my ancestors to Killeentierna in the 1830s. My GG Grandparents (William Glover and Gobnait Brosnan) are on Griffiths renting a house and land from Richard Meredith. I found a group of Glovers living in Killeentierna during that period and beyond. They were all stonemasons and appear in both COI and RC records. Glover is obviously not a Kerry name and I really want to find out where they originated. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

Hi Janglo,

Did you learn any more about your Kerry Glovers? John Grenham's website shows there may be about three separate origins for this surname in Ireland (https://johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=glover&search_type=variants), unless as you say one group split off from another and moved.

I have Glovers I can trace to Athlone, Westmeath in the late 1700s. I've only done sketchy research on Glovers in that area and they appear to be more prevalent in the northern part of Roscommon (seen on John Grenham's map as well, specifically in Kilkeevin parish). I also noted a Protestant connection there. In addition, though probably coincidental, after my Glover family emigrated to Quebec in about 1827, two sons apprenticed as stone cutters there ... at least that's how it was passed down orally.

Also note that John Grenham cites MacLysaght when providing this origin for the Glover surname in Ireland: "numerous: Ulster generally and Dublin. English occupational name which has been in Ireland since 15 cent."

Have you or any of your Glover relatives (older the better) done any DNA testing? My father is in many databases, but it seems any conceivable common ancestor would have lived too far back to ascertain the validity of any shared segments.

Hi there,

Lovely to hear from you. I have done the Ancestry DNA test and I will happily send you the details. I'm not that familiar with the DNA matching process but you are welcome to any information I have.

Most of my Glovers were based in Killeentierna in the early 1800s and were mainly stonemasons. I was never able to establish a link with the Roscommon Glovers but maybe it's there. I have a Peter Glover born in Killeentierna 1844 who emigrated to Quebec and his family grave details are :

Peter Glover died on 7 August 1919 in Notre Dame, New Brunswick, Canada, when he was 74 years old.

Concession 01328, Section B

7 Aug 1919 • Notre-Dame des Neige Cemetery, Montreal, Canada

I have more details including photos on Ancestry. I I don't know if they are related to you but if you want to give me your email I can send you a link.

Kind regards

Jan

Thanks janglo.

Do you have a public Ancestry tree that I could search Ancestry for (by name of the tree)? That might be safer than me posting my email here. I'm not sure how else to get you my email. IrelandXO doesn't seem to have internal private messaging.

Glad to hear back from you.
