Pam,
I hadn't checked the message board here for a while. But your message interests me. I think I can give you some extra information. John Barry and Catherine McCarthy had three children baptised in Duagh parish. These are:
John Barry: 29 Apr 1875 (baptised 9 May 1875) (sponsors: Jeremiah McCarthy & Honoria Sullivan)
Maurice Barry: 27 Jan 1881 (baptised 3 Feb 1881) (sponsors: Pat Doody & Elizabeth Stack)
Joseph Barry: 23 May 1884 (baptised 1 Jun 1884) (sponsors: David Barry & Ellen Lynch)
Maurice is evidently your grandfather. I can supply you with an image of the church record if you wish.
There was also a Margaret Barry who was born in about 1889. I have never been able to find her baptismal record - either church or civil. But I do have the record of her marriage: she married Daniel Brosnan in 1917. The marriage record indicates that her parents were the aforementioned John Barry and Catherine McCarthy.
What was really unusual about this couple is that they didn't get married until 1900 by which time your grandfather was nineteen. They were ahead of their time - having the children first and then marrying later. Quite modern!
In the 1901 census Catherine and her daughter Margaret are in house 4 in Pilgrimhill (Kilmeany, Kerry). Catherine's husband John was not at home but a visitor at house 6 in Pilgrimhill (Kilmeany, Kerry) which was Walsh's.
Pilgrim Hill is one of the six townlands that constitute Islandanny. I, myself, am from Islandanny and am familiar with the area that the Barrys lived. All the Barrys are gone from Islandanny now. When I was a kid Sean Barry was still alive. I don't remember him but people always spoke of him as a semi-legendary character. He was a great story-teller and very talented musically. He would have been a nephew of your grand-father.
I can probably fill you in on Broderick information also since they come from more or less the same area.
