Help me find out where my grandfather lived in Tynagh

GalwayTynagh (Galway)

I am doing some family history and just want to get an arial photo from Google. My grandfather, Patrick Slattery, lived in Tynagh with his wife Annie and there children Thomas, Anne, Christine, Patrick and Michael. Can someone tell me how to look up where their farm would have been located? I visited once in the 1970s but have no idea if the farmhouse still exists or not. Any information or direction you can give me will be grately appreciated.

The Andrew Slattery at Lissanard East townland Tynagh parish Co. Galway is listed on Griffith's Primary Valuation as holding a house and offices and sharing about 20 acres of land - the plot reference is 2a. The black and white maps on AskAboutIreland show 2b as being at the location of the northern group of buildings surrounded by trees on this google map. The coordinates are : 53.13282401, -8.32496859 - the buildings appear to be currently used as farm outhouses.

Thank you so much Shane. This gives me so much information. When I look at this map, I see the word Ballyleen beside the area marked and Ballyleen was definitely part of my grandfather's address. Can you please give me the same information for the area marked Ballyleen. Thanks again, this is such a big help.

Ballyleen townland is adjacent to Lissanard east townland - it's given as the residence of Annie Slattery at the time of her marriage to Patrick Slattery in November 1920, the marriage took place in the Catholic church at Tynagh village, which is a short distance to the north west of Lissanard east and Ballyleeen. At the time of the births of their eldest two children the couple (Thomas & Mary Anne) are listed as living at 'Lisanard' - no specific mention of East or West.

There are no Slattery .households listed for Ballyleen townland at the time of Griffith's primary Valuation, which is dated 1856 for this area, the only four Slattery households listed for the civil parish of Tynagh are those mentioned earlier - John with a house in Tynagh village, and a group of Mary, Michael and the previously mentioned Andrew at Lissanard East. Mary is adjacent to Andrew, 2a for him 2b for her, and sharing the land, and Michael is listed at plot 5, so a little to the east of Mary & Andrew.

In 1901 there is a Slattery family at Lissanard East which appear to be a good match for Annie's family - with father Andrew as per the marriage, there are also two additional Slattery households in the same townland, one of which may be Patrick's family. On the same census there is just one Slattery household shown in Ballyleen - head is a 70 years old Peter, his son Andrew and wife Bridget along with their five children.

To follow the properties forward to later years requires research at the Valuation Office in Dublin city, they hold Cancelled Land Books/Revaluation records which follow land holdings forward in the same format as the Primary Valuation, i.e. complete with plot references and maps.

The following is the google aerial view of plot 5 area, the blue circle indicates the location of Plot 5 - difficult to be certain for these views, may be an older building, the adjacent house to the north east is a new building.

Hi Shane

Thank you so much! This provides a lot of information. I am so grateful for your help.

Would you know how I would go about finding out who owns the land now? It may be a distant relative, I have no idea.

In Canada, we would use the land registry, which is about $25 to look up. Is there something similar in Ireland that you could let me know about?

Thanks again for your patience and all your work!

The place to start is with the Valuation Office I mentioned above, the records are in a similar format to Griffith's and carry forward to about the 1970s for most areas. The records are Revaluation Books/Cancelled Land Books with a new volume about every 10 years, many of these have been digitized and available to view in their office in Dublin city, unfortunately they are not available online yet, but there are apparently plans to do this at some stage in the future (Those for Northern Ireland are). The website was Valoff.ie but is now part of a larger system called Tailte.ie , I dont currently have a direct link to the Valuation record section, they should be able to do a search once you can give them a precise area - i.e. county/civil parish/townland along with a plot reference (e.g. 2a, 5 etc) and maybe a name (head of household)

For more recent searches it's more complex as not all are registered, as a starting point see these links Citizizens information - Property Deeds and Landdirect.ie

Hi Shane,

First, thank you for your help! You have really connected a lot of dots for me.

I wonder if you have any idea - I know you are not affiliated with the landregistry Ireland site you recommended - but I am wondering if you have any idea how long they take. I put in an order for the map and folio about two weeks ago and haven't heard anything yet. I am impatient I guess. Do you know how long it would take?
