Marriage of Patrick Sweeney and Mary Rabbitt 1859

Tuam (Galway)

I am looking for any birth records for Patrick and Mary Sweeney.

They later emigrated to England between 1864 and 1869 ( My G Grandad Michael was born 1869 in England).

Regards

The marriage date was October 31 1857.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has two Patrick Sweeney baptismal records of interest.in Tuam. Of course, if he was not from Tuam then these records are not useful.

Patrick Sweeney baptized August 5 1832 in Tuam. Father John Sweeny  mother Mary Garvy

Patrick Sweeney baptized March 17 1833 in Tuam father Patrick Sweeny mother Catherine Langan

The only Mary Rabbit record in Tuam was February 13 1820 father Daniel and mother Anne Kelly. I think this record is too far back unless she was around 37 when married.

Geoff,

I don't know if you have this information, but prior to their move to England, they had three children born in Tuam parish, Galway. Some of the baptism sponsors have their same surnames, so IF they were their siblings, then it might give you more clues to figuring out their parents. Here are the details: (from Roots Ireland)

Mary Sweeney, 3 Jul 1859, residence - Dublin Rd., parents - Patrick Sweeney & Mary Rabbitt, sponsors - Anthony Rabbitt & Ellen Rabbitt

Edward Sweeney, 6 Mar 1862, residence - Dublin Rd., parents - Patrick Sweeney & Mary Rabbitt, sponsors - John Reilly & Catherine Sweeney

Edmund Sweeney, 11 Feb 1864, residence - Dr. Clarks corner, parents - Patrick Sweeny & Mary Rabbit, sponsors - Anthony Rabbit & Honor Lally

The names Edward and Edmund are usually interchangeable, so it's quite possible that Edward (1862) died young and Edmund was named after him....a typical convention in Ireland.

Carolyn

Thankyou all for the quick response and information.

i knew about the 3 children, and that Dublin rd in Townlands of Rinkipeen or Carrowpeter was their residence but Patrick Sweeney is not listed as head of household in that area .

i am studying this new information thankyou

Geoff,

I'd say the correct town land is Carrowpeter because the Griffith's Valuation shows John and MIchael Sweeney as well as Peter & Patrick Rabbitt there. Those names do not appear in Rinkippeen. Patrick doesn't necessarily have to be listed if he didn't have the tenancy, but could have worked on the land of the other Sweeneys. I'm unclear what record from that time period that shows a "head of household" as seen in the 1901 & 1911 census records that you mentioned above.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

I don’t think I mentioned 1901 or 1911 I think they had passed away by then , I was looking at the same document that you got John and Michael Sweeney from.

It was the Griffins Valuation

Hi  Geoff,

I know you did not mention the census....I was just saying that the phrase "head of household" is used when referencing the census. I have never heard anyone using it when referencing Griffith's records as those just indicate the tenants of a particular town land.

Regards,

Carolyn

This is what I meant on the Griffith site
