Richard Dilleen/Dillon marriage to Anna Carr

GalwayClonkeen (Galway)

Hello,

My g-grandfather, Richard Dillon, was born 12 Dec 1853 in Shanballyeeshal, Clonkeen Parish, Co. Galway. He emigrated to the US about 1870. He married Ellen "Nellie" Coleman (whom he had known in Ireland) in 1879 in San Francisco. She named his parents in his death record: Richard Dillon and Anna Carr.

I am interested in finding a marriage record for his parents, as well as any other siblings he may have had. I believe he had brothers Hubert and Thomas. Any information about his grandparents the Dillons or the Carrs would be appreciated as well.

Thank you,

Colette Dillon Waldron

Hi Colette!

The RC parish for the civil parish of Clonkeen would be Ballymacward and Clonkeenkerril. Unfortunately, records for that parish are sparse. Baptismal records are available from 1841-1843 and then from 1855 on. Marriage records are not available until 1885. Civil registration of Roman Catholic marriages started in 1864. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0326?locale=en

I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of hosuehold listing for Clonkeen civil parish and Richard Dillon was listed in Shanballyeeshal townland. The only Coleman record in Clonkeen civil parish was a William Coleman in Gortnalone North townland. Not sure if he was connected to Nellie.

I tried to find a death record for Richard Sr. and Anne Dillon but I was unsuccessful.
