peacocke holmes marriage

Galway

Joseph Peacocke  RIC  Sgt;  married Mary Holmes.  I believe that the bride`s  family  came from Strabane. The Holmes family have many shared Christian names with the  Maam Cross  Peacockes.  Mary Peacocke died abt. 1913.

I would appreciate any pointers to the Holmes lineage.

Hello,

Attached are the death records for Mary and Joseph Peacocke. I could not locate a marriage record for them. Their children were present at death.

Regards,

Carolyn

This may be widowed Mary Peacocke in the 1901 census. She was born in Co Tipperary not Tyrone.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Letterfore/Shindilla/1394504/

and in 1911:

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Letterfore/Lurgan__or_Shindilla_/912201/

Mary Peacocke left a will. It should be in the National Archives in Dublin. The wills index says probate on her estate was granted in Tuam on 29th Aug 1913 to Elizabeth Peacocke (spinster) as executor. Value of the estate was £95. You would need to check the National Archives to find the will and see what bequests were made.

There is a tree on Ancestry that has a marriage record (Ireland, Select Marriages) that shows she was married 30 Sep 1862 in KIlcummin, Galway to Joseph A. Peacock. Her father is shown as Thomas Holmes. I don't believe that this tree has her correct birth place information though as it shows Co. Kildare. The tree also shows her mother as Margaret HIckey.

The tree is the Peacocke family tree, and authored by Claire Peacocke.

Carolyn

Carolyn,

The service record of Joseph Andrew Peacock should show his wife's native place. Usually a member had to have in the region of seven years in the force

before he got permission to marry.

FYI,

The above info I provided might need further research. On Joseph's military info, it identifies Mary from Tipperary (SR) or South Riding. I think Gotnahoe, Tipperary is in the South.

Gortnahoe - Wikipedia You probably have to copy and paste.

To add to your own research for your further investigation. I have not found godparents names for Joseph and Marys' children. If there is a Holmes it might help you identify where in southern Tipperary she is from. Although the pub they owned is still operational, it no longer belongs to the Peacock family. You might contact the current owners to see if they can connect you with someone from the Peacock family.

I checked the 1901 census, Galway, to see if there was another Holmes listed born in Tipperary. I did not find one but found a William Walpole Holmes, age 24, born in Longford, fisherman, living with his mother Bridget Donlan/ Donnellan, and step-father, Michael McDonagh in Oughterand, Gregg, Galway. Bridget Donnellan (Donlan) Holmes a widow, age 46 in 1901, was born in Galway and had married Michael McDonagh, in 1886. She had previously married a Thomas Holmes in Clifden, Galway in 1873. They had a son William Walpole Holmes in 1875 in Longford County. They had a daughter Catherine Holmes in 1878 in Oughterand, Galway. Thomas died between 1875 and 1886. There is a private tree on Ancestry (user name- nigfhloinn) that suggests that Thomas is from Cashel, Tipperary, no documentation. Could he be your Mary's brother?

Regards- Mary

I am really impressed by the  depth and speed of  all your efforts on behalf of the Peacocke (Maam Cross) family.   Previous to this  I have been digging into the Holmes  family of Urney, Strabane.

Mary`s daughter Isabella Wilhelmina  had me chasing  for Isabellas in the Strabane family (who incidentally were very  well off).

Other shared names such  as Arthur, William, John, weave in and out of the family lines.

I think that I must  keep digging the roots and avoid  tempting  rabbit  holes.

maamcross612

Just for the record,  Robinson Peacocke of Maam Cross  married  Mary Jane Fadden ( perhaps Burns (?) )  who was aunt to Sir Arthur Fadden, briefly PM of Australia.  Mary was  a postmistress.
