Patrick Greany of Galway

Galway

Searching for the birth place in County Galway of Patrick Greany, son of John Greany and Mary McDonald. 1900 US census claims he was born in May 1857. He married Amanda Roxbury in about 1877 in New York City.

Julie,

I have search RootsIreland (paid subscription) for a record for Patrick. Unfortunately I did not find one.

I found on Ancestry his gravesite on findagrave. If you click on the link, the gravestone includes a Mary Greany from Galway, died 1889. Did Patrick's mother come to America or a sibling? Have you researched her?

Julie,

The Roots Ireland site shows a Patrick Greany born on 24 Mar 1867 to John Greany and Mary Fitzgerald, residence listed as Knockatee, RC parish of Dunmore, Galway. Then on Ancestry, there are numerous trees with these parents and Amanda Roxbury as his wife. These same trees show many siblings to Patrick. So if you have an Ancestry account or can do a trial subscription, the tree with the most records that you want to view is the Maureen Molloy family tree. BTW, on that headstone mentioned above, I think that Patrick was just remembering his mother...she didn't die in the US. On the free site irishgenealogy.ie, Mary's death date was 25 Jan 1890 in Knockatee, Galway with John Greany present at death.

Regards,

Carolyn

Julie,

I don't think my reply was accurate...nor the Ancestry tree as Patrick was not 10 years old when he married! Sorry about that!

The earliest US census records show he was born around 1857 as you mention. He is probably from a parish in Galway that does not have early baptismal records.

Regards,

Carolyn

I looked at U.S. and NY censuses 1900 to 1920. In 1900, Patrick's birth year was 1857. But in later censuses, it was 1860, 1865, and 1865.
