McHugos in Loughrea, County Galway

Galway

I am trying to secure information about my great great grandfather Lawrence McHugo and his wife who were from Loughrea, County Galway. He was married (date unknown) to Bridget Fahey, who died when their children were young, circa 1853. They had two children Mary, born in 1849 and Patrick born March 15, 1851. They were Catholic.

Lawrence’s immigration document says he was born in 1817, and he emigrated to the U.S. on or about the month of August in 1854 and landed at the port of Whitehall, NY. His wife had died by this time but his children also emigrated.

He had a brother Thomas who was born in 1825 and immigrated to the U.S. and the brothers settled land close to each other. I believe Lawrence had a sister Mary, who immigrated to the U.S. (birth and immigration date unknown).  And he may have had a brother Stephen who was married in Ireland. There is also a family document that says he had another brother Michael who immigrated but went by McCue when he came to the U.S.

I am visiting Ireland in September and would love to know more about my family.

Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have the names of the parents of Laurence and Bridget.

It would appear according to the Tithe Records in East Galway that the surname was McCue.

Karen,

On the subscription site Roots Ireland, I located two baptismal records which may be of interest. The RC parish was Ballinakill/Woodford which is south of Loughrea parish. The first record was for a Patrick McHugh father Laurence and mother Bridget Fahy-date March 16 1851. The second record was for a Bridget McHugh father Patrick McHugh and mother Bridget Fahy same parish. Possibly, these records are for your ancestors.

Please complete our Meet and Greet form for your visit  https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your quick replies!

I do not have the names of either Laurence or Bridget's parents.

Roger, I think the first baptism record may be for my great grandfather Patrick. I was able to locate it online. If the birthday I have is correct, would they have baptized him the day after he was born? Also does the record have witness names? I see the name Catherine Fahy, but it's hard for me to tell if it's connected to this record.

Would this record give a lead as to where Bridget was buried? Would she have been buried in a Catholic cemetery in the area?

I will fill out the meet and greet form.

Thanks!!!

Sponsors were Patrick Fahy and Catherine Fahy  Here is the register entry  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632969#page/4/mode/1up   Babies were baptized fairly soon after birth.

Baptismal records did not show burial info. Here is the register entry for Bridget's record  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632969#page/14/mode/1up

Civil registration for deaths started in 1864. Prior to 1864, some churches maintained death data but not Ballinakill/Woodford. If Bridget died young, she was likely buried in the cemetery near the church. I'm sure there is no marker/headstone.

Roger,

Thank you for these links.

Is it a possible that Patrick's baptism sponsors were his maternal grandparents?

Is the second link to Bridgette's burial record? It's hard for me to decipher what it means. I attached the part of the page that I believe refers to Bridgette.

Would they have been members of Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist in Woodford?

I received an email about Meet & Greets and also that I have a contact who will help with research. Should I be directing further questions to that person?

You have been amazing unearthing this information.

Thank you, thank you.

Karen:

The sponsors could be the grandparents but or siblings to Bridget or her brother and his wife. No way to tell for sure.

Second link is Bridget's baptismal record.

The church would be the present day parish of St. John the Baptist Woodford. See this link  https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/30342011/catholic-church-of-saint-john-the-baptist-woodford-woodford-galway

Sure, you can direct questions to your local contact or come back here if you want.

I looked at baptism record you forwarded for Bridget and it's dated 1853. Since Bridget was Patrick's mother, I don't think that is her record. (Patrick was born in 1851.)

Through FamilySearch, I found a marriage registration for Bridget Fahy for 1847 in Loughrea. I cannot access the original record, perhaps it's not digitized? It says it's page number is 415, volume 7.

It also says spouse unknown.

I have a birth date for Mary McHugo, Patrick's sister of July 23, 1849. I could not locate her baptism on record online. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Karen

Karen:

I think you are confusing two Bridgets. The 1853 record is for Bridget sister to the 1851 Patrick and her parents are Laurence and Bridget Fahy.
