Maddens of Eyrecourt

GalwayEyrecourt Meelick Clonfert (Galway)

Researching the parents of Francis Madden (1826 - 1910), who went by Frank Madden. Francis was a stationer/bookseller in Louisville, Kentucky who married Anne L. McKenzie in 1849. Frank's son Edward Francis, known as E.F. Madden (1856-1900) was a journalist and newspaper owner in Louisville. Frank also had 3 daughters:

1. Successful book author George M. Madden Martin (her name was actually Georgia May Madden, born 1866 in Kentucky; she went by a pen name as a male because male authors were more successful) 2. Journalist Eva Anne Madden (born 1863 in Kentucky) 3. Julia Alice Madden

Frank was born in Brooklyn, Kings County in 1826 and his parents were supposedly Pedraic (Patrick, Padraig, Padraic) Madden of Eyrecourt Galway and Margaret Moran or Morian. According to Frank's obit, he moved with his parents to Louisville, Kentucky when he was 12. He was an only son.

Any ideas?

The RC church records for Eyrecourt start very late. Baptismal records are available starting in 1884. Civil registration of births started in 1864.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Galway shows seven Madden households in the Eyrecourt area so the surname was very common in the area.

DNA testing may be helpful in determining possible Madden connections.
