Looking for living decedents of Kate Clarke (neé Lohan) or Maureen Crehan (née Clarke)
Hi All,
This is my first time posting so please bear with me.
My great-grandmother, Ellen “Nell/Nellie” Frances Lohan (Helen Logan after she immigrated to the U.S. and then Helen Scanlon after she married my grandfather) was born in Ballygar in 1904 to Michael Lohan and Mary Lohan (née Lohan). Ellen had 2 older siblings siblings; Ann “Annie” Marie Allen (née Logan/Lohan) and John J Logan (Lohan). As well as 5 younger siblings; Mary “Mamie” Margaret Logan (Lohan), Kate “Katie” Clarke (née Lohan), Elizabeth Lohan, Bridget “Bea” Lohan, and Margaret Lohan. They grew up in Kilclogh/Kilclough (as seen on the 1901 and 1911 census).
My great grandmother, along with her siblings Ann, John, and Mary Margaret, all emigrated to the U.S. during the years of 1920-1928. The younger 4 siblings, as far as my great grandmother’s knowledge, were to have stayed home with their parents. Her father, Michael Lohan, died in 1954 around Mountbellew, and her mother, Mary Lohan, died in 1967 around Camderry.
My father visited East Galway around 1985 with his own parents—my grandfather (Ellen’s son) and my grandmother. He recalls that when they visited, they found my grandfather’s aunt (one of Ellen’s younger sisters) and his cousins at their home. I believe the sister of Ellen’s they might have met was Kate Clarke, as from her obituary, it looks like she was still alive at this time and living in the area. (Kate was born in Mountbellew in 1909 and passed in Ballinasloe in 2005. Kate was married to Michael Clarke in 1944. Michael was born in Ballygar in 1907 and passed in Newbridge in 1971. They are both buried at the Killyan Old Cemetery.) From Kate’s obituary, it also looks like her daughter, Maureen Crehan, was living in the area at this time as well. For this reason, I believe the house they visited belonged to Maureen (Clarke) Crehan, and it is possible that Maureen may remember meeting my father, grandfather, and grandmother during that visit. Unfortunately, I cannot be certain, as my grandfather—who knew the most about our Irish family—passed away unexpectedly in 1993.
My greatest hope in posting out on this page and doing this research is to find family members that we were disconnected from and to learn more about my family history in general. If you know anything about the Lohan/Clarke/Crehan families in the East Galway Kilclough/Camderry/Mountbellew/Ballygar/Ballinasloe/Newbridge/Cloonkeen/Killian/Moylough area, I would love to talk.
Thank you for your time.
