Kinvara Connection

Galway

I will be visiting Ireland in August 2025. My maternal great great grandmother Anne Moran migrated to Sydney Australia from Ireland when she was 17 years old in 1877. She is listed on the NSW assisted passengers list as Roman Catholic, occupation home duties, can read and write and her native place is recorded as King's County (Offaly). I cannot find Anne's birth/baptism record on rootsIreland.ie.

I know her parents' names as they appear on Anne's marriage certificate (married in Sydney )- her parents are John Moran and Anne Roohan. Both are recorded as from Ireland. John is listed as 'farmer' and on rootsireland.ie the records show that John and Anne married in Lemanaghan Co.Westmeath on 14/2/1855. I think I have found Anne Roohan's birth/baptism (in Lemanaghan Co. Offaly in 1838) but cannot find John's.

My dilemma is that my grandmother insisted that her grandmother Anne Moran lived in Kinvara, Co. Galway. Other family members were told the same but are unable to shed any further light on this.

One reason for my Irish visit was to see Kinvara...but I am not sure of our connection to the place now..

Thank you for any help!

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a baptismal record for an Ann Moran baptized April 22 1860 with parents John Moran and Ann Rohan. The RC parish was Kilcleagh in Co. Westmeath. Kilcleagh is also known as Moate and is on the border with Co. Offaly. Other siblings were Patrick 1855 John 1858 Francis 1861 Kieran 1868 James 1871 Rose 1875 Mother's maiden name shown as Roohan or Rouhan on the transcriptions.

Jencc,

Roots Ireland shows a baptism record for John Moran on 28 Apr 1842 in the RC parish of Kilcleagh, Westmeath. Parents - Kieran Moran & Rose Doolan, Sponsors - Michael Doolan & Rose Moran. Given John's children's names, I'd say this is the correct record for John. Griffith's Valuation (1854) shows three Moran men - Kieran, John, and Frank holding tenancies in Ballynahown, Kilcleagh, Westmeath.

Carolyn
