Tullagh Upper/Loughrea, Herd's house

Loughrea (Galway)

Hello. My great-grandfather Patrick Burke was a herd. He was living in Tullahill (Tullagh Upper) from 1869 to an unknown date. In 1869, there is a death record of one of their children with this address, my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Burke was born there in 1874 and the youngest child was born there in 1878. I don't know if they were still living there in 1892 when my great-grandmother Maria (née Keating) died. I've seen that in the Griffith's Valuation of 1858, the only description written for Tullagh Upper is "Herd's house and land". The only name written is Robert D'Arcy, with lessor the Marquis of Clanricarde. (I have read that Robert d'Arcy was an agent for the Clanricarde estate.) On the maps of Tullagh Upper from Griffiths, I see what may be a couple of structures along the Galway Rd (southern edge of Tullagh Upper). Perhaps one of these could be the herd's hut.

I would like to ask if any one knows of a way I could get more precision about where the herd's house was in Tullagh Upper at this time. For example, would there be any historical information about this part of the Clanricarde estate? Maybe the Loughrea library could have something?

I will be in Loughrea on May 7 and I would love to be able to identify where the herd's hut was located to know where my grandmother was born. I would really appreciate any information. Many thanks.

CMTS,

I know this doesn't answer your question but I came across this information during my search.

I found this article on Facebook

"Attack on the Marquis of Clanricarde's Agent

As Robert D'Arcy, of Woodville, J.P., agent to the Marquis of Clanricarde, was proceeding home in his gig on Tuesday evening at half-past six o'clock, he was met by two men near the hill of Tulla, a mile from Loughrea, one of whom caught the reins of the horse, and struck Mr D'Arcy on the forehead with a stone, which threw him backward in the gig, while the other assaulted him with a heavy stick, inflicting a severe wound on the right side of the head near the temple.

Both men then attempted to pull him out of the gig for the purpose, it is thought, of murdering him, but were prevented by the arrival of one of Mr D'Arcy's herds.

The outrage is considered to have been committed to revenge some recent evictions on other parts of the marquis's property, over which Mr D'Arcy is agent. The perpetrators escaped. The police are on the look out for them. An investigation will take place on Thursday next.

Patrick and Marys' death records can be found on Irishgenealogy. Patrick is identified as a farmer. Note Mary's daughter Teresa witnessed her death. Are you aware of Teresa. I couldn't find a record.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for all the interesting information and links. I've started looking through it all! The article about the attack on Robert d'Arcy was very interesting but I think the herd mentioned in that story would probably not be Patrick Burke since it happened in 1852. I don't think the record of Mary Burke who died in 1892 is the right one. I suppose it's possible she could have been in Doogarraun if she was being taken care of by family there. But, although her age of death (52) could be correct, I have never heard of a daughter named Teresa. The first 2 known children of Patrick and Mary Burke were born in Cahernamuck, Lackalea (Carrabane) in 1861 + 63. Later, in 1866 and May 69, they were living on Bride St, Loughrea. Then they were living in Tullahill in Dec 69 and onward until they moved to Garacloon South, near Craughwell. I don't know when they moved there; if it was before or after Maria (Keating) died in 1892.

I wonder if you would know the name of the estate which would include Garacloon South . Patrick died in 1918 in Garacloon South (CP Kilconierin). Thanks to you, I have found his death record on Irish Genealogy. His occupation is given as "farmer" but since he was 86 and hadn't been well for "some years" (according to the record), I imagine he was no longer working as a herd. His death was reported by a daughter (Margaret) from his second marriage. If he was 86 in 1918, he would have been born in about 1822. If this age is correct, he was born earlier than I thought so I need to do some more searching about him. I don't know his place of birth or his mother's name. His fathre's name was given as William (on his 2nd marriage record with Margaret Fallon of Craughwell).

From what I read in the information you sent, often the father of a herd was also a herd. If this was the case, it could help me in my searching.

Many thanks, Mary for your help!!

Cindy,

I just thought it was an interesting story about D'Arcy.I don't know who the herd was.

I do not know the estate which would include Garacloon South.

Per Irishgenealogy, Patrick married Mary Fallon in 1892. They had three children- Margaret 1893, John 1894, Jane 1894. Is the gravesite at the Carmelite Cemetery your Patrick's? Notice on the 1901 census his birth was 1840, in 1911 birth shown as 1837, and his death record shows 1832. They typically did not celebrate birthdays in Ireland then. People did not know what year they were born, It could be off by 10 years.

Hello Dave and Mary. Many thanks to both of you for all the information you have provided. Dave, I will be in Dublin for 2 days in May and I hope to go to the Valuation Office as you suggested to look at Tullagh Upper and also Lackalea and Cahernamuck East. I will be looking at all the links you provided! Thank you for finding a record about the marriage of Patrick and Maria in 1858. I believe I have seen this record if it's the same one you found (witnesses Murphy and Kelly, no addresses).

Mary, I had been made aware from a previous search of the birth record you provided me with of Patt Burke born in Carrabane in 1837 (parents William B and Mary Hart) and also that there was another son named William, born 1833. I wasn't sure this was the right Patt (mostly because I had once been told by a relative that the family had come from the Portumna or Tynagh area). But I think now that the Patt Burke birth in Carrabane must be the right one. I suppose his father may have come from the Tynagh area, especially if he was also a herd and needed to move around. I have looked for a sister named Mary as shown on the 1901 census as Mary Dillon (sister, widow age 67) who was living with Patt Burke in Garacloon South but I haven't found any records about her. I did see that there was a James Dillon living in Lackafinna South (borders on Lackalea) in 1856 (Griffith's). I thought he could be a possible link to Mary but I haven't found anything else about him.

Records of the 1st two known children of Patrick and Maria (Keating) show them born in "Cahernamuck, Lackalea" (Maria 1861 and Bridget 1863). Bridget's death in 1865 was recorded with address "Cahernamuck, Carrabane". I believe their 3rd child Thomas E. was also born there (1864?) but I don't have a record of his birth. I'm assuming that this is Cahernamuck East since it borders with Lackalea. There was a herd's house there and also one in Lackalea. I am wondering as I look at the Griffith's valuation if the names of the herds are ever recorded. Do you know? Also, since I know that Pat Burke was a herd, would you think that his father, William, was a herd also?. (While I think of it, would you know of any old churches or graveyards associated with the area of Cahernamuck/Lackalea that I could visit? I wonder if the people in that area would come all the way to Loughrea for the Sunday mass.)

Yes, Patrick Burke is buried in the Carmelite Abbey Cemetary. I'm hoping to find the tombstone when I'm there. The tomb was first erected for "Maria Burke née Keating" by their son Thomas (mentioned above). Thomas emigrated to the U.S. in 1884 and returned to Ireland for visits in 1910 and 1913 with his own son Thomas (who was about 10 years old at the time). During one of these visits, he had the gravestone erected for his mother Maria. In 1918 his father Patrick was added to the gravesite and in 1943 his brother Michael (born in Tullahill, died in Salthill) was added. Michael had emigrated to the U.S. in 1891/92 but later he returned to Ireland (probably in the 1930s) to live the rest of his life there. Just as a matter of interest, Michael refused to return to the U.S. to live despite the pleadings of his children! (As per the ancestry link you showed, my grandmother Mary Elizabeth did marry a Tully who was from Co Mayo.)

I will be contacting the East Galway Archaelogical and Historical Society to see how I can obtain their Loughrea 1926 booklet. I saw on their site that they also have booklets for Loughrea 1791, 1824, and 1846.

Many thanks again!

Sincerely,

Cindy

Than you for your reply Cindy. Please let us know if you were successful at the Valuation Office.

Have a fantastic trip to Ireland.

Hello Mary and Dave,

I wanted to let you know that I had a fantastic trip to Ireland.  I was able to spend a full day in Loughrea wandering around and visiting the Abbey Cemetary where I saw my great-grandparent's tombstone..

In Dublin, I was able to go to the Valuation Office (revised books) although for not as long as I would have liked. I viewed the Lackalea Elect Division (Loughrea) because Patrick Burke's first children were born (1861-66) in Cahernamuck (Lackalea Elect Div).  I saw a Patrick Burke in a herd's house of Coorbaun townland which is just 1 townland across from Cahernamuck (with Lackalea townland in between them).  This house was on a lot of 36 acres and the immediate lessor was a James Joyce.  In 1863, Patrick Burke's name was crossed out and replaced by James Joyce "in fee".  I didn't find any other pages for Coorbaun so I couldn't verify when he started being the herd there.  I checked Griffith's Valuation and in 1856 there were 3 herd's houses in Coorbaun (and not much else!).  The one with a lot of 36 acres was occupied by Thomas Healy at that time.  Does it make sense that Patrick's children were born in Cahernamuck and that he was in the herd's house in Coorbaun in 1863?  I was thinking maybe he was only there for a short time .

And I was wondering about something else.  As I think I mentioned earlier, I'm trying to find out when my Burke family moved out of Tullahill (partly to determine where they were living when my great-grandmother Maria Keating died in 1892.)  Someone told me that I should check lists of pupils in Loughrea schools.  Since my grandmother could both read and write, she must have gone to school.  If the family were still living in Tullahill in the 1880s, I might be able to find her name as a registered pupil there.  Their house in Tullahill was approximately a mile and a half west of Loughrea which might indicate which school she would have attended.  Would you have any ideas about how to find this information?

Thank you very much.  I so appreciate the help you have given me.

Sincerely, Cindy
