Family of Thomas Joseph Gavin

Killoscobe (Galway)

I am looking for living relatives of Thomas Joseph Gavin born on September 24, 1882. He was the son of Michael Gavin and Catherine Flanagan who were married in the R.C. Chapel of Mountbellew on February 11, 1871. Thomas Joseph emigrated to the USA in 1907. Some of his siblings were named Honor, John, Patrick and Michael. I think they stayed in Ireland. Two other siblings, Timothy and Martin emigrated to the USA. I am hoping that some family may still be in the Mountbellew area. I will be staying in Galway City for two weeks beginning September 17th. Thank you for any information. Arlene Gavin Crane

Hi Arlene,

Thomas's birth registration shows he was born 6 Nov. and not 24 Sept.  However, births had to be registered within a certain time period or a fine had to be paid.  So people sometimes gave a false birth date to avoid the fine.

Arlene:

Birth record for Thomas third record https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/birth_returns/births_1883/02744/2008666.pdf Record shows November 6th birth date. Very possible family changed the date because birth was registered late

Mother Catherine died in 1887 second record https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1887/06210/4776833.pdf

Both records showed Ballinalahy as townland which could be Ballintleva in the nearby civil parish of Killosolan.

The 1901 census showed that Michael Gavin was living in Corgerry Oughter townland in Killoscobe civil parish. With him were Honor (27) and Martin(15) Did Thomas already emigrate? Maybe he went to England before America?

This marriage record (see fourth record) could be Honor marrying in 1907 https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1907/10084/5668064.pdf

I don't see a good lead for Martin Gavin in the 1926 census. Thomas and Honor Barrett and four children were living in the townland of Bovinion in Moylough civil parish.

There is a very good Facebook page for East Galway Genealogy and DNA. May be worth a posting. https://www.facebook.com/groups/eastgalwaygenealogy
