Glinsk/Kilbegnet Parish

James Flynn & Bridget (nee Walsh) were my Great x 2 Grandparents, both -I believe - born in the Parish of Glinsk/Kilbegnet, Galway.  

They married there in 1842 and their children:  Bridget Flynn (1844), John Flynn (1848) & Mary (1848) had their births registered in the Glinsk Parish Register.  The family emigrated to England sometime in the 1860's (no certain actual year) and settled in Birmingham, England.   Bridget Flynn (1848) went on to marry Henry Francis Westbury and together became my Grand Parents.   I have also traced her brother John Flynn over in England, but I believe her sister Mary died in infancy or quite young as I have no record of her in England.

James Flynn c1810 was shown to be a Tailor on Henry & Bridget's Marriage Cert and I am anxious to trace him in Galway as such, also to trace the parents of both James Flynn & Bridget Walsh or any of their respective families.

I admit up front that James' spouse Bridget, who I recently narrowed down to Walsh (with help from someone in Irish Roots) may not be correct, although with two of the known three children being correct in name and date, I think it quite likely is.  However I am prepared for it to be another Bridget if necessary.

If  any of the above rings a bell or someone can point me in a direction to help me narrow down my search I will be most grateful as my Irish Ancestry has so far proven quite elusive.

Hi Beth,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Glinsk (Elphin). These date fromk 1836 for baptismal, marriage and burial records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4620. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

Gklad to see that you have already checked Griffith's Valuation. You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

Hi Sinead, thanks for theinformation. It was easier said than done, but I perservered and it is posted, albeit not under a Glinsk/Kilbegnet Parish.

It kept telling me I needed to join a Parish to Post and in my innocence I tried Glinsk and Kilbegnet & both, but could find neither. I thought my first posting was to Glinsk/Kilbegnet site to which another had posted but using Post a Mesage only one site was shown as available, so I joined and posted under that.   At least it was in Galway.

As i am a new user to the site maybe there was a way round (there usually is) so if you can point me in the right direction I can try again, or leave things as they are.

Just to clarify, Kilbegnet is the civil parish and Glinsk is the Catholic parish. You need to join Kilbegnet.

thanks for your reply - I have found the ship manifest record for Bridget Fleming and her mother and siblings, they came through New York and presumably Castle Garden in 1865, prior to Ellis Island.   I haven't been able to get any additional information about their immigration.

I did find nearly all the children's baptismal records in the Glinsk parish online records but their parents, Patrick Fleming and Mary McDerrmot were born (I believe) prior to that 1835 start date to the on line records.

I haven't been able to find death records here in the US for either of them to obtain parents names - I guess writing to the parish just might be the next option-- I've been searching online but not finding a good address.   It's a bit confusing - am I looking in Galway or Roscommon for a present-day address?

Small success - I found the marriage record for Patrick Flemming and Mary McDermott in Glinsk parish, but unfortunately it does not indicate their parents, only the witnesses. I'm thinking that this might be specific enough to write the parish priest for more info?on

Could you suggest how to send a donation for the parish, or how to provide return postage?

Ireland Reaching Out

After much traditional research, and more recently DNA comparisons, I am reasonably certain that my grandfather Michael Curley's parents were William Curley and Hanora Morrissey of Leahive, Co. Galway. Their son Michael was baptised at the Glinsk R.C. Church on 7 August 1873. He was no longer living with the family in 1901. (My grandfather arrived in the US about 1890, settling in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.) It would be great if I could find a direct male descendant with whom I could compare DNA.
