Haddican and Gleeson Families
Hi. I've just returned from a trip to Galway/Mayo and Roscommon, searching for both Gleeson and Haddican families. On the very last day the kind people at Glenamaddy Post Office put me in contact with a famer who's mother was a Haddican.
The area with the strongest connection would be Strangefort, but.... (there's always a but!) the baptismal records for my family are recorded in Bekan which is north of Ballyhaunis, around 20 miles north. I wonder if small towns like Glenamaddy had to report to the larger towns ie Tuam/Ballyhaunis for marriage and births?
My searches end with Edward Haddican born in 1797 possibly married to Mary Reily (possibly Mayne) born 1804. They had children prior to leaving. John born 1827, Thomas 1829, Mary 1833, Bridget 1835, Edward 1836, Ellen 1844. They are first found in England in Bradford on the 1851 census. They have travelled with Catherine Haddican who lives in the house next to their lodgings so I'm assuming she is a cousin.
I also have a Mary Haddican born in 1809 who was the first of the family with that name to arrive in my home town in Derbyshire. She had a son John born 1829 and a lodger called Patrick Haddican 1836.
The Gleeson link for my ends with Andrew (sometimes listed as Henry) Gleeson born in Ballyhaunis (I think this is another example of the main town for registering baptisms etc) in 1794. We think his wife was Mary Delaney born 1805.
They had sons John born 1828, Patrick 1830, James 1832 (he went on to marry Bridget Haddican) Michael 1838 (who went on to marry Mary Haddican) Mary 1841, Bernard 1848 and Robert 1848.
The Gleesons landed in Derbyshire sometime around 1854 when James married Bridget.
I have a strong thought that the families knew of each other in Ireland because to have lived so close to each other and then arrive in a very small town in Derbyshire is a huge coincidence.
Sorry for rambling on!!!
