Ullick Burke

GalwayCraughwell (Galway)

I have an ancestor Ulick Burke B c1829, letter carrier from Oranmore to Kilcolgan and married Ellen Higgins (from Tuam) in London 1854. Both died London 1907.

He and Ellen did go back to Craughwell and had a boy Hyacinth Burke born in or on the way to Ireland and was baptised in Craughwell in July 1857 (From Craughwell parish records).

I am looking to trace Ulick's father (shown as Hysent on England Marriage cert) but probably Hyacinth, and the Burke family.

A family myth has us as related to Clanricarde??

Can anybody help me with this please?

Many thanks Tony Callis Auckland New Zealand

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

I was unable to find a baptismal record for Ulick or Hyacinth on Roots Ireland. There was a 1785 Church of Ireland baptismal record (see below) but I presume this is not your ancestor. RC records back to 1800 are very scarce in Co. Galway.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household for Killora civil parish (which includes Craughwell) shows two records for a Hyacinth Burke. Not sure if either is for your ancestor http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/killora.htm

Here is a link with some info on the Earl of Clanricarde  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_of_Clanricarde

Craughwell is a nice little village. There is a very nice pub called Rafterys in the middle of the main street.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Hi Roger thanks for the reply. I do believe my cousin in England and I think this could be our relation. Proving it is the key. Clanricarde did sign off his postal application??? Please see the attached but not sure if it helps. It is the 1857 entry for a Hyacinth who I think is a grandson to our elusive Hyacinth and son of Ulick. I have taken an autosomal DNA test but how do I use it to prove the ancestry?

Thanks Tony

Tony:

Not sure which company you tested with--Ancestry or Family Tree. Hopefully, you can identify some of your matches that also have Burke or Higgins or other ancestry from the Galway area near Craughwell or Tuam. Sometimes matches have more information on the family line. I have been able to break down one of my brick walls and one on my wife's side. Right now I'm in correspondence with someone who appears to be a fourth cousin back to Co. Down. You may also want to visit www.gedmatch.com  Gedmatch allows you to upload your raw DNA and see if you match someonw who tested with another company (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch). Gedmatch is a volunteer run site.

Hi Tony,

Hyacinth Burke was my ancestor too. Wondering if you found any more info since?

Many thanks

Hi, I know this thread goes back several years but I have just come across it in my research.

I don't know yet whether Hyacinth Burke is actually an ancestor of mine but he was a witness at the baptism of Ellen Hanberry (sister of my great great grandmother Bridget Hanberry) in July 1867 in Craughwell, county Galway. I'm guessing that he is the same Hyacinth Burke mentioned above. However, based on his baptism record from 1857 (parents Ulick Burke and Ellen Higgins) he would only have been 10 years of age at the time of Ellen's baptism. I'm not sure if this is feasible or not?

I would be very interested to know if I have a DNA match to either Tony or Sean above. I have done my DNA with Ancestry and have a public tree there under my name (Juliette Agnew). I have also uploaded my DNA to Gedmatch.

Thanks and regards,

Juliette Agnew
