Cloon townland
re TOWNLANDS;
Griffith's Valuation for the TOWNLAND of CLOON,Ballynakill,Ballynahinch,Galway shows a MARY COYNE as tenant of the Rev.MAGEE.A subsequent entry in the VALUATION REVISION Notebook shows that this tenancy is transmitted to PETER COYNE who remained on this this CLOON townland until his death in 1905.The question raised is: Was the MARY COYNE a tenant under a married name ? And if so,what was the christian name of her husband? And was there a relationship between MARY COYNE and PETER COYNE-possibilities being ,son ,nephew,cousin.(COYNE was a common name in this district).A search through the TUAM A-diocesan parish registers (Omey-Ballindoon) does not show any marriage entry for the PETER COYNE who married ANNE KING and who was a long term tenant on the Cloon townland.The only possible paper evidence is the baptismal entry of a BRIDGET COYNE noted as the daughter of Peter and Anne (nee KING) Coyne 1859,Omey-Ballindoon,which is indicative of a marriage but which cannot be traced in the tangled records of the Tuam archdiocese.
Based on the characteristic pattern of naming male children after parents/grandparents ,JOHN seems the most likely name for the husband of MARY COYNE if she was the mother of PETER. John,Peter and Michael are the names which relate to the male descendants of Peter Coyne in the typical pattern. A possible link maybe is the PENSION request of one,WINIFRED COYNE who claimed a pension based on a remaining 'fragment' of the 1851 irish CENSUS.She lists her name with those of several siblings including a PETER whose age fits that of the PETER COYNE of Cloon.(based on he 1901 census).Winifred's parents are noted as JOHN and MARY COYNE nee GALLAGHER and resident of KNOCKBRACK townland adjacent to Cloon.However ,apart from the pension application,there does not seem to be any further paper evidence of marriage,children tenancy etc of the background and relationships of Peter and Mary Coyne.
Can anyone in the Cloon,Cleggan district assist in sorting out these relationships?
Michael Coyne,g-grandson of Peter and Anne Coyne.
