Curley, Martin or Corley, Martin from Ahascragh

GalwayAhascragh (Galway)

My ancestor, Martin Curley, was born in about 1808 in or near Ahascragh. Family story suggests his parents were Daniel Curley and Mary Moulton. He came to America and first settled near Rochester, NY, where he piloted a canal boat, then to Arlington, BureauCounty, Illinois, where he bought farmland and lived until his death on 18 July, 1873. In America, he used the name "Corley." I am looking for documentation of his birth, of hisparents and their marriage, and any siblings. Found a record of a Martinus Carly, born or christened on 9 Nov 1805, Elphon, Killian, his parents listed as Johanais and Cicilia Curly, but this does not match my family story. So, still looking for another Martin Curley, son of Daniel and Mary (Moulton)Curely/Curly/Carly,etc. Thank you ahead of time for any assistanceanyone can provide.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Very few RC parishes in Co. Galway have records back to the first decade of the 19th century. Ahascragh for example has records starting in 1840 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0535  I did check Roots Ireland from 1798-1818 in Co. Galway and did not find a baptismal record for a Martin Corley or Curley with a father Daniel.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Roger, thanks so  much for the response.  I will ask my cousin, a male "Corley" in our line, for the autosomal DNA testing. Is there a company you recommend for the testing?

Pat,

Anyone can have the autosomal test done.   Siblings get 50% of each parents DNA, but they don't get the same 50% from each parent.  Unless the siblings are identical twins. Your cousin will have a different mother and so half of the results won't match at all. If you are doing one test I'd recc your own. Joan

Pat:

Gillespie/Mitchell is correct. You can take the autosomal DNA test. I have done DNA tests with Family Tree DNA and Ancestry. I prefer Family Tree. Family Tree was having a sale last week on their autosomal or Family Finder test.

As a point of information the Y-DNA test requires a male family member to take the test.

re: Martin Curley of Ahascragh

Hi Pat

I hope that you are still receiving messges from this post

Would appreciate getting in touch about your query - the name 'Martin' runs in our branch of the family and through DNA I have found Ahascragh ( and surrounding parishes) Curley connections especially with families with that forename

The surname is found mainly in East Galway and South Roscommon , with the Suck river in between. It seems from the DNA evidence we have so far the families travelled south from their ancestral homes in Ulster c 1500s and settled in the area in the early to mid 1700s curleysurname.weebly.com

Hi Martin, It was fun to see your message.  Another Martin Corley/Curley!  Thanks so much for the reply.  I do not regularly check on this site but I received an email notice today that I had a response here.  Have you done DNA testing for yourself?  What company did you use?  How far back have you been able to trace your family?  My cousin, Bud Corley from Illinois, USA, visited Ahascragh a few years ago and did locate two brothers with the last name of Curley who lived in that area on a farm. Also, in the USA, there have been descendants of our Martin Curley (abt 1808-1873) named also named "Martin Corley."   My email address is pathubbell@yahoo.com, I live in Wrentham, MA, USA I was amused to see in the references of this web site for the name "CURLEY' were two books about James Michael Curley.  He was an infamous politician here in Boston, MA.  Once I did look up his family background and his family also came from the Galway area.  We have photos of our Martin Corley, a treasure to have.  I can email them to you. Pat,

Go to Griffiths Valuation on "Ask About Ireland.ie" and ask for Daniel Curley in Galway, parish Ahascragh and you pull up a Daniel Curley. You can then look at where his land was, as well as the original page description.  Joan

My Gt.gt.grandmother Mary Curley arrived in Sydney, Australia on 13/02/1841 on board the "Jane Gifford".  With her was her sister Honorah.  Mary was 21 and Honorah was 16.  The shipping notes stated that their father was Malachi and he was a widower and servant living in Ahaseragh. The girls were assisted immigrants.

Perhaps they were related?   Joan Hickey, Auckland, New Zealand
