Wright family who came to Ontario Canada around 1820

Fermanagh

Hello! I am researching a Wright family who settled in Victoria County Ontario Canada around 1820. Family records indicate they came from Ireland. I am trying to determine exactly where, in Ireland, they came from. When searching the land records for Victoria County I noticed that a large portion of the settlers were listed as having come from Fermanagh. So I am reaching out, although I suspect it's a long shot.

With a name like Wright, I am finding it difficult to locate this family. William Wright born around 1776 and his wife Elizabeth (no maiden name) came to Canada with several children (I think there were eight of them). Other families in the area were Black, Kennedy, Love, Copeland.

One daughter Sarah Wright, born in 1814 in Ireland (could have been County Down). Any assistance/advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Hi Beth

It is a bit difficult to locate an ancestor without a mother's maiden name or more exact place of birth. I haven't been able to find a baptism early enough for a Sarah on rootsireland.ie where most parish record information is located.  Ancestry.com does have some records for the period but I haven't been any more successful there.

Do you know what religion the family were? As you can see Wright was quite a common name in the mid-19th century - the majority in northern counties

Best wishes

Hello Clare!

Thank you for your kind response.  The Wright family in question identify as both Church of Ireland and/or Methodists.  I believe they were also members of the Orange Lodge when it was established in Ontario Canada.  Other children that I have been able to trace:  David born in 1808, William 1819, (I have their death certificates),  there may have been a James and an Elizabeth also born in Ireland.  Wiliam (senior) was granted location tickets to settle in Ontario and the family did rather well.  I knew it was a long shot, but really would like to solve the mystery as to where they came from.  All documents indicate Ireland, nothing more specific.  One census record indicates that Sarah born in 1814 was born in County Down, but those records have not been substantiated.  I have also posted on the Down message board (with no luck).  Thanks so much for your interest.

Hi again

Feel free  to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others. You can use Ireland xo as the placename where it asks for a parish.

Best wishes
