Ralph Stutt and Mary Potts

I dont have any direct knowledge of the Stutt family you are talking about, but I know of a Stutt family who used to live in the Aghadrumsee area.  There is an Archibald(Archie) Stutt buried in St Marks (CoI), Aghadrumsee and they used to have a wee shop in the Killyfole area.  I carried out a bit a research and they dont seem to be native to the area and must have came from somewhere else.  That coupled with the simular name I reckon its worth looking into a bit further?

When you say she died at Ballagh, do you know anything more, like a parish?  Although Ballagh is a very common description in these parts (means a pass/pathway, usually over a mountain or through a bog) Im only aware of one townland in Fermanagh and thats in the Parish of Galloon.  There used to be a small 'chapel of ease' at Ballagh which was linked to Sallaghy Parish (again part of Galloon Civil Parish). So Sallaghy might be a good place to have a look?

As to the Stutt surname its very rare in these parts to give you an idea the Fermanagh Lakeland Phone book only lists 3 entries and one of those are in Tyrone!

I have a few people I could ask about this but with life getting in the way it could take time!

Thank you so much for getting back to me....and so quickly.  First, I must make a correction...Ralph and Mary were married on May 19, 1832 at Linaskea, not May 9 as i stated earlier. I've often wondered if there would be a record of their marriage in the Parish Church?

You ask whether I have additonal information about Elizabeth Stutt. what I do have is that she was born 1777; Died at Ballagh, Co. Ferm. 14 Oct 1867 age 90 years.  Her husband was Archibald of Drumlone, Littlemount and residing in Boyhill Co. Ferm in 1830...Died 1848. Archibald's father was Ralph Stutt of Cullyname, Co. Tyrone (Aghalurcher Parish).

Backing up to Ralph Stutt (son of Archibald and Elizabeth) I have that this Ralph lived in Boyhill, Co. Ferm....was born 1812.  Married Mary Potts (Born 1807) of Tattinderrry Co. Ferm 19, May 1832 Linaskea.  

Archibald of Drumlone and Elizabeth had 4 other children we believe:

(1)  Archibald Baptized 1817 but died prior to 1823;

(2) a second Archibald Born 1823 married a Mary Ann and had two children (Archibald B:1850 Whitepark) and (Mary Ann B:1853 Lisnaskea);

(3) John Stutt of Knox married a Mary Ann and had two children Jane B:1837 and John B:1843

(4) Andrew Stutt of Cushwesh and Henrystughan, Co Ferm (Born about 1817; Died 1851) married Isabella and had 4 chidren: James (B:1834 D: 9 Dec 1839); Archibald (B:1844); Mary Ann (B:1846) and Eliza Jane (B:1849)

Sorry for dumping so much information on you.  But success on any front would be great fun.  Also, can you tell me where the Littlemount i mentioned is located?

Littlemount is located to the north of Boyhill, on the other north side of the Colebrooke River.  Its an area Im not that knowledgeable about.

Cushwash is a townland just outside of Lisnaskea, on the current Moorelough Road(A34 I believe) heading to Newtownbutler.  I wonder if the Stutts and Farrells are related?

Im very interested/curious about this Elizabeth Stutt who died in Ballagh.  Why was she there!!??

Sorry but I haven't seen any mention of Farrells in our family history stories...and no idea why Elizabeth would have been in Ballagh.

Do you think there is any chance of finding Ralph and Mary Pott's 1832 marriage registration in Linaskea?

Im not sure to be honest, it depends where they married.

I done a quick search on the net for Mary Potts and Ballagh and found this

"Elizabeth Stutt's parents were Ralph Stutt and Mary Potts. They emigrated to Canada in 1833 from Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh. They had 10 children. 1. John married Mary Jane Henry; 2. Elizabeth married Alexander Ballagh; 3. Mary Jane married Alexander Henry; 4. Margaret married John Ballagh; 5. Archibald married Margaret Brown; 6. Ralph married Annie Cowan, then Margaret McNeil, then Hannah Hill, (was he married a fourth time because he was buried next to Laura B. Ballagh; 7. Francis married Sarah Henry; 8. Catherine married James Rowland; 9. Andrew William Stutt died 21, not married; 10. "Mary Thompson came to the Stutt home sometime before 1881. She was listed as a domestic in the Stutt home in the 1881 census. Mary Potts Stutt died in 1885. When Ralph Stutt died in his will he left money to his adopted daughter Mary Thompson Stutt as well as to his other children. In the 1891 census Mary Stutt was a domestic in the Robson household at Bond Head. From reading that it sounds more like she died in the household of Ballagh as in a surname or maybe there is a town or village in Canada named after Ballagh family?  But that rules out her coming back to Fermanagh!!

The 1901 Census shows a William (65) Sarah (30) and Matilda (27) Stutt living in Armagh Manor, Ballagh.  Please disregard my previous ramblings.  All Church of Ireland, which would link them to Sallaghy Parish.

I didnt realise that this small plot of land down to the river is still in the townland of Ballagh, I assumed it was in Keeran.  It turns out Matilda Stutt and her sister run a small shop from her home during the war years.  The wee house is still there, viasable over the fence.  Heres the house on StreetView - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Ballagh,+Fermanagh&hl=en&ll=54.224337,-…

My mind is racing around all the possibilities you've given me.

1) i don't want to lose track of finding Ralph Stutt and Mary Pott's marriage record. all i know is that they married on 19 May 1832 in Lisnaskea Church. A cousin told me that the Reverand was Mr. A. Hurst?

2) thanks so much for the ancestry board discussion link re Ballaghs. i will look into that.

3) if i understand your last post, William Stutt and family lived in Armagh Manor, Ballagh...part of Sallaghy Parish, in 1901. Matilda and sister later to run shop from the house you found on streetview for me. Amazing find. Now to the pertient quenstion. Coud I ever connect them to my Stutts? Does any of that line live in the area now?

4) Do you think my earlier Elizabeth Stutt who died at Ballagh in 1867 was of this same William Stutt line? If she died at Ballagh could that mena this same cottage than you sent to me by Streetlink?

I totally understand you don't want to lose track of that marriage.  I am just trying to place the family and who might be related.  As Stutt is a rare name, its possible they are related.  Information learned can only serve to prove or disprove a link!

Although I have no evidence to support it, I do think the Stutt's in Ballagh are related and this could be why she died there.  Sick / ill family members were often taken in by relations, if sons/daughters no longer lived locally. There are no Stutts living in this area today.  As I said there are only 3 in the local phone book.

I'm almost certain that the cottage I showed you is the place she died.  I have been told there might be a Stutt grave in Sallaghy which I plan to have a look for when Im in the area.

Your logic makes sense to me and I'm very excited to think that you've found the very cottage where my direct ancestor died in 1867.  Add to that your find of a Stutt family who lived there during the 1901 census combined with your story about the Stutt girls running the shop during the war years is also exciting.  Some time ago I exchanged emails with a chap who's wife was a Stutt from Co. Fermanagh. Their knowledge of their Stutt family history didn't go back into the mid or early 1800's and since i knew nothing about Stutts there in the 1900's we couldn't connect our families. I will try and reach them again to see if they know of the 1901 William Stutt you mentioned or the Stutt girls who ran the shop out of Armagh Manor during the war years. Simple wonderful stuff!!! Hopefully they still use the same email address.

Your question about which Lisnaskea Church sent me digging thru all my all files and papers looking for more. Don't be mad at me but I did find that an early relative of mine learned that 'the registers of Lisnaskea Parish' held the entry on the marriage of "Ralph Stutt of Buchal in Aghavea Parish and Mary Potts of Tattinderry, Aghalurcher Parish, on 19th May, 1832". Her files also state that Buchal is probably now called Boyhill.  Please don't be mad at me for finding this just now. I don't want yout to feel I've sent you on a wild goose chase.  I guess the question that remains is which church? I know they weren't Catholic but I quess that doesn't narrow it much for you? Sorry.

Aww now Im extemely angry! ps. I've ordered a copy of the death reg of my gr gr gr grandmother Elizabeth Stutt who died 1867 at Armagh Manor, Ballagh. Hopefully i'll learn her maiden surname? I will be visting next year to see if i can find her heastone.

I think this is my family line. I am related to Archibald stutt. Edgar's and of course hemphills.
