Maguires and Sheerins of Maguirebridge

FermanaghAghalurcher (Fermanagh)

My great-great-grandparents, John Maguire and Ann Sheerin, were originally from Maguiresbridge, emigrated from Ireland to Boston about 1860, and moved to New York City about 1867 where they died and are buried.

Ann's parents were definitely Thomas and Ann Sheerin but John's parents are not definitely known. However, John and Ann's first child was named Thomas Francis Maguire, their first daughter was named Margaret, and when she died young, a subsequent daughter was also named Margaret.

In looking at microfilm records of Aghalurcher, I found a baptismal record on 7 Sep 1841 for John Maguire, son of Francis and Margaret Maguire so I'm pretty sure this is the right family.

I plan to visit Ireland this April and am looking for suggestions on where I might find the burial grounds for the Maguires and Sheerins.

Dear Brendan

My grandmother was a Maguire and all seem to have originated from that area, her family specifically near Clones, Co. Monaghan. I have a family history of the Maguires someplace and will scan and send to you, you will find it interesting if nothing else.

All the best

Here’s a link to a CD which lists burials in Fermanagh. Bear in mind that in the early and mid 1800s many people could not afford a gravestone and so were buried in unmarked graves. The majority were buried without gravestones.  Burial records rarely exist for the early 1800s. Quite a few graveyards were multi-denominational, and families sometimes had plots in graveyards some distance from where they lived.  So your ancestors might not necessarily have been in an RC graveyard, nor in the one attached to the church they attended.
