O'Dell Family in Limerick

I am researching my G.G.Grandfather Patrick O'Dell, born in Limerick, possibly around 1820. He enlisted at Belfast in 1840 to the 57th Foot Fusiliers and married Sarah White in 1842 at Fort St George, Madras, India. I understand that he might have been born in the Parish of St Patricks, possibly with connections in a village named Tumm though not sure if this village exists. He drowned in 1865 in Limerick whilst on leave from the army either at sea or possibly in a canal near St Patricks Parish. He had a number of children, Mary, Annie, William, John, Charlotte, Alice plus my G.Grandfather Patrick O'Dell - 1854-1906. There is a long military history and connection with Limerick and I would be grateful for any further information / advice in regard to further research and verification. Roots Ireland  www.rootsireland.ie has an 1820 baptism for a Pat O'Dell in St. Patricks RC church in Limerick. Possibly this is a record for your ancestor. Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

I do not have any information on military records.

by chance I was looking up a name in MacLysaghts The Surnames of Ireland and came across this entry under Odell.

"An englsh name formely Odle and quiet incorrectly written O'Dell, connected with County Limerick since the mid 17th Century. Followed with two abbreviations referring to Bibliography of Irish Family History and More Irish Families."

These twists in Irish names is not unusual and was written on recently in the Irish TImes, possibly last Monday which may be online shortly as they do not put it up immediately, there is nomention of that name in particular though.

May be of some assistance.

Hi, my ancestor John O'Dell O'Sullivan from Shanagolden, Limerick. He and his family came to Australia in the 1800s and I have been having trouble trying to go further back. I always wondered why he has O'Dell in his name and thought maybe the O'Dell family were someone significant. I wonder if there is a connection to your O'Dells. He married Catherine O'Connor.  They are buried in Pt Wakefield South Australia.

Hi Corrine - thanks for your reply.  Not sure if my family O'Dells were significant but I know there were significant O'Dells in Limerick in 1800's.  There is a family member currently in Australia, named Patrick O'Dell also who's researched the family history.  I'll check where they're from and message back.  Regards - Val Knight, Kent, England

Hi Corrine - a relative, John Patrick O'Dell (1907-1972) emigrated to Australia in the 1950's and I think his son, Patrick O'Dell plus family are also there.  John Patrick died in Gladstone, Queensland, and the family researched extensively on Ancestry.com website with a family tree under Rowan / O'Dell.  Hope this helps with your research, regards Val Knight

Hi as far as I'm concerned my name is O'Dell as is all my family we don't recognise any other way of spelling
