HI Valerie,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townland name, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable. Many Books also record the landlord's name and an assessment of the economic productivity of the land. The tax payable was based on the average price of wheat and oats over the seven years up to 1823, and was levied at a different rate depending on the quality of land. For Parishes where the registers do not begin until after 1850, this information can be useful, as they are often the only surviving early records. They can provide valuable circumstantial evidence, especially where a holding passed from father to son in the period between the Tithe survey and Griffith's Valuation.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to Savages/Littles and what happened to their land (as it usually passed on to a relation).

There is lots of useful information to be found in the 1901 and 1911 census records. You can find this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ .

You could also try  http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ for church records in the area. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

I wish you luck in your search.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

Kind regards,

Cynthia O'Connor

Hi,

Did you find any other information on the Little family, Spahill, Borris.  My great, great, great grandmother was a Little of Spahill.  There are no Littles in Spahill now but in the 19th century they had a substantial (by local standards) holding.

Mary & Rebecca,

I would love more info regarding what you know about the Littles of Spa Hill. My 5x great grandfather was Thomas Little b. abt 1750. He married Catherine Willoughby in 1777. Their children were Elizabeth (who married Peter Valentine), Frances (who married George Whitney), James (who married Jane Bennett), John 1779-1854 (who married Mary Proctor), William b. abt 1781 (who married Jane Keppel), Catherine b. abt 1783 (who married Robert Heath), Jane (who married Phillip Hornick), and Charlotte 1798-1869 who married Thomas Budds. I have marriage settlements for all but Mary. I have info for a Mary b. abt 1783 who married a Thomas Doran, but I can't say for certain she is Thomas's daughter. I think her father might have been a George, but I'm not 100% sure about that. I can glean from the marriage settlements that Thomas had substantial land holdings. It seems his children all married "well." It appears that Thomas may have originally acquired Spa Hill in 1789 per a lease agreement. I would love to know where he was before that. Also, any other birth/death dates for the names I mentioned. I think many in the family were impacted by the events of 1798. Phillip Hornick was murdered. His watch survived and has been passed down the family for hundreds of years. I believe my 4x gg John Little's house may have been burned down in Myshall and he subsequently moved to Johnstown. I don't know if there are any property damage claim records that may exist? I read that some people were compensated. I think Thomas's father might have been a John Little, and I think he might have had a brother named Samuel, though I have no proof of the relationship. A group of descendants of Thomas Little meet periodically via Zoom. We've pieced together quite an extraordinary history. We're fortunate on two scores - one is that the family were somewhat successful and participated in marriage settlements and deed records, and the other is that the documents are among those that survived for over 200 years. Hope to hear from you... Jill
