James O'Connor in Dublin - help needed tracking his address or family in the census & city directories

Dublin

Linked & attached are the death record and newspaper notice for James O'Connor in Dublin. I am trying to build out his family tree and am starting with what I have, ie., his address. I would like to find who is living at his address in the 1901 census, 3 Moyne Rd, Rathmines, plus find this address/occupants in city directories before/after 1896. I also plan to search irishgenealogy.ie to see if I can uncover any vital/baptism records that might tie in with the the O'Connor family at that address. Hopefully this will provide some clues I can then work with.

Specifically I could use help with the census - I don't quite know how to find the 1901 occupants of 3 Moyne Rd and, it seems I'm not well versed with searching city directories to find 3 Moyne Rd and occupants, year by year.

There are clues in these two records, such as an address which looks like 3 Moyne Rd, Rathsmine, Dublin. James O'Connor was married at the time of death and had held what I would suspect was a steady, decent job. HIs father was Thomas O'Connor of Cloontarrif, County Kerry. His death notice was posted in a Kerry County newspaper, so presumably he has ties there.

Ultimately my goal is to determine whether this James O'Connor is part of my O'Connor family. I do know there was a James O'Connor of this general age range in Dublin and there are some intriguing overlaps.  If I can identify this James O'Connor, his wife, and with any luck - a marriage record - it might be enough to make a determination if he is from the same O'Connor family.

GDT...Please have a look at the following 1901 census entry. A widowed Frances O'Connor Browne, age 70, born in Kerry, was living with three adult children in Dublin.  Two of them were born in India. James was a customs officer--could he have been posted to India at some point? Also, Frances here is well off, living off investments. I hope this helps.

Thanks Patricia for taking the time to do some searching for me & coming up with an interesting theory.  I'll have to ponder how I might be able to cross check this with the very little information I have.

Out of curiosity, how would you interpret what appears to be a double surname and Browne as the latter part of that surname?

Much appreciated.

Gail,

You can search the 1901 census at www.census.nationalarchives.ie . Select the year, then Dublin, then Rathmines & Rathgar East, then Moyne Rd. There you will see that the houses are numbered beginning with 467, so I do not know about the address you are seeking, 3 Moyne Rd. Perhaps someone on this forum who is better versed in the census will give you some information. I did not see any O'Connors on Moyne Rd. If you look at the 1911 census for that road, you will note that the houses begin with a 1, but there is no 3. These numbers are not addresses as we have today, they are simply the number that the census taker gave the house as he went from home to home. First house is number 1, second house number 2, etc....

Attached is Samuel O'Connor Browne's 1869 birth record, his father was Edmund and Connor was his mother's maiden name; so not the one you are looking for.

Also, your attachment from the Kerry Post does not show any obituary.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thanks Carolyn,

I have scoured the 1901 census and like you I did not find any O'Connors on Moyne Road, nor a 3 Moyne Road.  I was hoping someone else might know how to manipulate it better, although regardless of the number it seems that there were no O'Connors there anyway.

Thanks for helping eliminate the O'Connor Browne family - it was an interesting idea (thank you Patricia).

The obituary is there - you have to scroll way down (beyond where you think) and it is on the bottom right.  Sometimes the articles from Irish Newspaper Archives display in that way.

Thanks,

Gail

Moyne Road runs roughly north-south from Dunville Avenue to Windsor Road between Ranelagh and Rathmines - the numbers start at the northern end with odd numbers to the east, number 3 is the second house on the left heading south.

In Thom's 1894 the principle occupant of number 3 is listed as C. Howard esq, in 1899 a Mrs. Farrell and in 1904 a Mr. J. Doyle.

The house is unoccupied in the 1911 census so only appears on summary forms - see : Form B1 - House & Building Return

Whilst the enumerators in city areas generally used street numbers as their census reference numbers in many cases the enumerators for Rathmines did not - so the 1901 census reference numbers do not match up with street numbers for much of this area.

Shane - thank you so much.  That is exactly what I was looking for.  So we know the O'Connors were there only a short time.

In the meantime I"ve found a bit more - I went to bed thinking I should check Glasnevin Cemetery, which I now have.

It seems that James O'Connor, died in 1896 (as we know) but this record indicates he was widowed.

He is buried at JA 39 1/2 south

The informant is a Thomas John O'Connor, 4 Victoria Terrace Phillipsburg Avenue County Dublin

It seems Thomas John O'Connor died the following year 1897, age 28, while residing at 2 Trafalgar Terrace, Bray, County Wicklow

He is buried in the same plot as James

The informant is James O'Connor, 33 Mountjoy Square, Dublin

And, then James O'Connor died in 1904, age 30, while residing at 13 South Circular Road, Dublin, (Jervis St Hospital)

He is buried in the same plot as James & Thomas

The informant is Catherine King, 5 Westmoreland Street, Dublin

I'm having trouble attaching these burial records, so will save this message and try again.

I am finding Catherine King in the 1901 census, but I am not seeing any obvious connection to the O'Connor family as it seems that her married surname is KING and her maiden name was also KING.

I DID IT!  This James O'Connor is 100% part of the family I was hoping he might be!

I've identified his wife as Ellen Devenish and in addition to his sons Thomas and James, mentioned above, I've identified a daughter, Elizabeth Margaret O'Connor, married to Richard Croker King (yes - here is the KING surname-see previous posts - I'll have to look at this more carefully).

The clue however in the attachment is that Elizabeth's father James is the nephew of Baron O'Connor Kerry. Baron O'Connor Kerry is Daniel O'Connor, Colonel in the Austrian Army and ennobled as a Baron AND is the brother of a Thomas O'Connor, which brings me back to the original death notice where it identifies James O'Connor's father as Thomas O'Connor.

Now to add him to my tree, continue to build out his family.  I'd love to identify all of James O'Connor & Ellen Devenish's children & their families.

That is one more child of Thomas O'Connor accounted for!  I believe there may be 13, I now have found 6!

THANK YOU!

A small detail from the burial of James in 1896, in case the names ring any bells - the informant is a Thomas John O'Connor of 4 Victoria Terrace, Philipsburgh Ave. which is in Clontarf, Thom's 1894 lists the main occupant as a S.R. Ashworth, and Mr. Francis Townsend in 1904..

shanew147IrelandXO Volunteer

Shane, unfortunately, those names do not ring a bell, at least not at this point.  I very much appreciate going the extra mile to check for me.

Thomas and his brother James died relatively young and unmarried. There seems to have been another Elizabeth, born 1870, who likely died young since an Elizabeth Margaret was born in 1873.  Elizabeth Margaret married but as of the 1901 and 1911 census it does not appear she & her husband had any children.  Unless I find another child of James O'Connor and Ellen Devenish, their line might have died out.  Two children were born in Derry and two in Dublin, so it seems the family moved about to some extent at least within Ireland because of James (the father) job with HM Customs. I have not yet found any other children, but I hope I do!

Irish Newspapers Archives has really been worth every cent, at least with my family. It helps to have something to cross check against, ie., "nephew of Baron O'Connor Kerry", "James O'Connor, Customs", etc.
