James Doyle and Catherine Beirne

Dublin

There appear to be two different couples with the same name in the Dublin area.  There appears to be one in in Killinardan, Dublin area and another in the Tibraddan, Dublin area.  It looks like in some family trees I have seen online there is some confusion as to what children go to which parents.  There is a gravestone on the Find a Grave site for one James Doyle and Catherine Beirne in Tibraddan.

I am trying to figure out what happened to the Doyle family from Killinardan? What cemetery would they be buried in?  There is a death record for a James Doyle in Killinardan in 1885. No record found for that Catherine Beirne (Byrne) yet

In one family Tree on the Family Search site, they have the oldest child baptized in 1851 and the youngest born in 1878.  A 27 year difference between children,

Can anyone help straighten out?

Tim

All depends on the exact timeframe, for the earlier years the closest graveyards to Killinarden would have been in Tallaght, Saggart and Bohernabreena and for Tibradden possibly Cruagh old possibly even Glencullen, Kilgobbin or one of the ones in Kiltiernan - the problem is records, many of the early graveyards used were mixed domination and based at historic locations, whilst the 'Church of Ireland' burials may have been noted (although may not survive) other denomination were often not. Catholic parishes rarely kept note of death/burials. Unless there was a headstone and it survives there is unfortunately little chance of confirming a location.

For slightly later South Co. Dublin burials try Deansgrange cemetery - records are online - see : DLRCC Everafter Denasgrange cemetery opened 1865 (this system also covers the later Shangannagh cemetery) Deansgrange is now a council cemetery and the records are free to view and include burial registers and plot references along with an option to see all burials in a plot - so includes burial plots without a marker/headstone/memorial.

Unfortunately with Common surnames like Doyle and Beirne, particularly on the east coast, duplicate couples are probably to be expected - added to that is the likely spelling variants for 'Beirne' - e.g. Byrne, Burn, O'Byrne etc

Do you know the occupation for 'your' James Doyle and details of the child that is your direct link ?

The two locations are not really that far apart in term of rural parishes....although a tough hilly trip, if your James was for example a 'herd' he could easily have had to move around the hills.

I see an 1878 death that seems to fit - James Doyle reported age 56 died 30th October 1878, married, occupation Farmer, place of death "Tibradden, Whitechurch" (*) informant is a Garrett Doyle of the same address. this matches with a FindAGrave entry for a headstone transcript from St. Maelruain's Graveyard Tallaght. FindAGrave James Doyle jr. 1878. The entry contains photos of two Headstones, one cross types, which also mentions a Patrick Doyle died 8th March 1945, and the other larger with various other Doyle family members :

Erected by Catherine Doyle of Tibradden in memory of her beloved husband

James Doyle died 30th October 1878 aged 56 years,

also the above Catherine Doyle died 23rd April 1891

and Garrett Doyle dies 4th October 1926 [poss. the informant on the 1878 death]

(plus Ellen, Elizabeth, James, Peter & Thomas)

also mentioned are parents Margaret and James (snr)

The deaths from 1864 onward should be registered, and those from 1870 available on IrishGenealogy - although some deaths were not registered.

St. Maelruan's is an old mixed denomination graveyard located a little to the east of Belgard road.

(Extract from OpenStreetMap - St. Maelruan's graveyard, Tallaght, Co. Dublin)

-* Tibradden townland is Cruagh Civil parish, but adjacent to Whitechurch parish.

I am aware of that gravestone in Tibradden.  It appears to be for a different James Doyle (10-9-1878) The irishgenealogy,ie website has the death record for another James Doyle who died in Killinarden 8-18-1885. I was wondering what graveyard he would be buried in.

Those headstone were a very lucky find, not many families had headstones, or could afford them. I listed some likely graveyards for Killinardan in the earlier reply - Tallaght is one of them, but finding the other Doyle family burials depends on

a) their being a headstone/gravemarker (that survives and is legible)

and

b) it being transcribed on FindAGrave or similar

other option is a burial in a Cemetery i.e. in this case Deansgrange which kept good records

Very few of the old graveyards have records, many of the Church of Ireland registers (including Tallaght) which might cover mixed graveyards were lost, and few Catholic parishes kept death burials. I see that James who died 1885, married farmer with reported age 60, informant a Sarah Martin also of Killinardan

I checked Deansgrange and there are a few James Doyle burials, but I didn't see any that came close matching age/date of death for this James

.

Since it appears to be unlikely that burial records or headstone are available than the best bet is probably to persist with a search for deaths for Catherine and known children - the other Doyle headstone at Tallaght at least help link those names to the other Doyle family.. and eliminate them from your primary family. Burials are not easy to find as there was no central system for recording these, added to that was the earlier restriction of Catholic churches and graveyards. Sometimes you may find death notices in Newspapers which mention where the funeral mass is to be held and possibly where the burial is to be, also can include some family details - again this depends on the family having the money to pay for the notice.
