Finding my parish

Dublin

Hi,

I have just joined Ireland Reaching Out, although I have been researching my family history for a couple of years now.

Firstly, I am trying to establish which parish my ancestors lived in. I know they were in Dublin, but not which parish. My 4th Great Grandfather, William Paulet Carey, was born in Redmunds Hill in May 1759. His father, Christopher Carey, was also born in Dublin in January, 1719, although I don't have an accurate address. I do know that Christopher died in 1797 in Krinklin, Nr Bray, Dublin County.

Christopher was a baker and I think that his business was also in Redmunds Hill.

Any help identifying which parishes Redmunds Hill, and Krinklin are in would be very greatly appreciated, so I can post in the relevant section to see if I can find any more information on my ancestors.

Thanks very much in advance for any help anybody may be able to provide.

Regards,

Martin Frost.

Redmonds Hill is in Dublin south city, close to Cuffe St., and in St. Peter's civil parish see here (I've linked to a c1890s OSI map as it's easier to spot than on the older maps).

Crinken is close to Shankill south Co. Dublin, and close to the Wicklow border - the civil parish would depend on eactly which part, but probably Rathmichael.

What denomination were your Carey family ?

I scanned and transcribed the Merchant & Traders from Watson's 1783 Directory and a search of the details shows Christopher is listed as a baker at 2 Redmonds Hill - see here  (you can click on the icon at the right of the column to view the original directory). There's a map to go with the directory which is here

Hi,

Thanks very much for the prompt reply, I am very grateful.

The Carey's were Catholics.

Martin.

Your dates are probably a little too early for RC Church records, as during this timeframe the Catholic administration structures and parishes were not well re-established after the penal laws, so boundaries changed quite a bit..

For Catholic parishes, Redmonds Hill would probably have been in St. Nicholas, at Francis St., and the Crinkin address the RC parish would have been either Bray or Kingstown/D?n Laoghaire.

Hi shanew147,

Thank you again for your assistance. One final question, am I likely to be able to find any information regarding my Catholic ancestors in Dublin prior to the early 1700's, or am I correct in thinking that due to the penal laws I am unlikely to be able to find this information?

The reason I ask is that there was a large 'Carey/Carew' population in the South West of England from the time of William the Conqueror, and I (and one or two other family members) are trying to work out whether there may be any connection between the South West England Carey's and the Dublin Carey's.

One reason (albeit extremely tentative) that suggests there may be a connection is that the surname/middlename of 'Paulet' crops up. One of the West Country male Careys married a Paulet, and my 4th great grandfather was William Paulet Carey. Like I say, it's very tentative, but I just wanted to check it out if I could.

Not withstanding the paragraph above, one reason that strongly suggests there is no connection is that the West Country Carey's were Protestant, and the Dublin Carey's were definately Catholic, so I don't imagine they would have departed England Protestant, and converted to Catholic on arrival in Ireland!

Anyway, sorry to waffle on, and thanks once again for your assistance.

Kind regards,

Martin Frost.

The average starting date for RC records is about 1830 particularly for rural areas, but some parishes in cities and large towns have earlier records - although these are generally include only very basic details, e.g. no 'addresses'. The search most of the Dublin city parishes (exception being St. Paul's, Arran quay) check the free IrishGenealogy website  There's a list of the dates included for each parish here .

Earlier records have many gaps, ofetn due to missing or deteriorated pages etc e.g. the IrishGenealogy Lists shows records for St. Nicholas RC/Francis St, back to 1742, but there are a number of significant  gaps - e.g.in baptisms there's one between 1752 and 1767 . There's a more detailed look at RC record availability for the city on this link  (Irish Times / John Grenham, St. Nicholas, Francis St. is shown as St. Nicholas Without, which is the name of the civil parish)

The earliest Carey records showing up for me on the IrishGenealogy website are for the 1720s, with many showing up as 'Keary', also worth bearing in mind that Latin is often used for first names in the earlier Catholic records.

I didn't see any additional directory listings for Christopher , or for other Careys as bakers or at Redmond hill, but I did see another baker, a Thomas Barry in 1834 at the same address. Dont know if there's any connection, but thought worth mentioning...

Do you know William's trade/occupation - was he a baker, did he stay in Dublin ?

p.s. As part of a mappig project I have seen mention of a Catholic chapel 'at Crinken', although I have not located the exact position yet. I suspect it was located somewhere not far from Shankill village

Hi shanew147,

Thanks once again for taking the time to assist. William did not follow his fathers profession as a baker. He was at various times an artist, publicist, engraver and art critic. He spent quite a lot of time in America, finally living in Birmingham, England, where he died in 1839. There is a Wikipedia article about him here, including his picture:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Paulet_Carey

Although a number of his siblings had notable careers, his brother, Mathew, was arguably the most accomplished. He apparently played a significant role in the early United States, shortly after the Wars of Independance, both as a publicist, and in political circles. He also appears, with his picture, on Wikipedia here:-

Thank you for the links to the sites above, I'll go and have a look at them now.

Thanks again,

Martin

Hi Martin,

I've been on the trail for the ancestors of William Paulet Carey as well. He is also my 4x great granfather, which would make us 5th cousins. One of the best leads I have is the names of Christopher Carey's parents, grand parents and great grandparents, etc, which I found in the Gardiner Howard Pennington Carey pedigree from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.  I have uploaded a part containing the Carey family tree. I have the full pdf  I can share. Christophers' wife Meliora (our 5x great grandmother's Sheridan family is perhaps even more interesting). You can look at my sources in Ancestry here.

I also have a profile in wikitree which doesn't go back as far as Ancestry because I don't have good sources past Christopher Carey married to Lettice Young (born mid-1500s). Burke's peerage was the main source past that point and is all a fiction apparently.

In the past 5 years I guess you may have found more, so if you are keen to connect, please get in touch. I'll be doing Ancestry DNA so if you have done that let me know and I'll send my DNA info.

Hang on. Is this you? Check out the family tree attached. Your Leonard ancestor name in interesting!
