Dublin street maps.

Dublin

Does anyone have a street map of Dublin circa 1900/1960. My grandmother Margaret Ryan nee Connell (1879-1964) lived in 9 Emerald Cottages off Grand canal street. She often spoke of "The Aunt Maryanne", who I apparently met. Now, I was led to believe this Aunt lived in Leitrum place which was behind a pub, which was at 25 Grand canal street. Smiths pub I think. I have recently been informed that the Aunt may have been related to a Willie Byrne or his wife Bridgett, who actually lived in a lane/ alleyway alongside Leitrim Place. I seen amap of this area some time ago, but did not know of these people or that they lived in this Lane.

The purpose of this search is that I now think that my Ggrandfather Patrick Connell (1839-1898)may have married twice and the Aunt could have been a Stepsister.

I would be grateful if anyone would be able to help.

Thankyou in advance.

Noel

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This site maintained by one of our volunteers has considerable info on Dublin city.

Hi Noel

I worked in that area for over 20 years and never came across Leitrim place but a Google search brough me to Boards.ie and a query on Leitrim Place see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056734707 ;

There is a link to Leitrim place on the site from the OSI site and if you move in you can see the name. Apparently it is gone with the Grand Canal Hotel taking it over. The area in general has been developed with offices and while I am not familiar with all the pubs there is a Smyths at 10 Haddington Road about 150 metres or so from where Leitrim Place was, around it has been developed but the pub is as was when I was there first in the early 1980s and can be seen clearly on Google Street view, it is a the triangular bit where Percy Place joins Haddington Road at the Baggot Street end. Of course there may well have been other Smiths pubs about as there are a few near Leitrim Place as was.

The OSI is Ordance Survey of Ireland but I think the link Roger gave is very good.

starting with a Thom's street listing for 1927 ..

Grand Canal Street Lwr. , Hogan Place to Clanwilliam Place - has no number 25, numbers up to 17

Grand Canal Street Upr.,  McQuay's Bridge to Haddington Road - a Thos. Nolan, tea wine & spirit merch. at number 25.  The listing shows the junction with Leitrim Place between numbers 21 and 23, so close to no. 25 Grand Canal St. Upr , which  could have backed on to the buildings on the place.

As far as I can work out, 25 was here (c1900 OSI) - the even numbers run west to east on the north side of the street, with odd numbers along the south side going east to west.

Thom's 1943/44 shows an Ed. C. Smyth Tea, Wine & Spirit Mecrh. at 25 Upr. Grand Canal St.

Thanks,
Roger, Pat & Shanew.
Lots of possible options. I've tried to search the surname Byrne for this area, nothing conclusive as yet.
I know that I was 6 years old when I was taken to the home I am looking for in 1957. The voter register has leitrim place but I'm not convinced that site definitely the address I'm after

Many thanks
Noel.

Hi Noel,

I am not too sure if you are looking for a person or a place. If its a person I found a Death cert for Patrick Connell 28th/Dec/1892 it was Registered. It said Maryann Connell was present and he died at 7 upper Stephens Street. Age 50yrs that would make his Birth in 1842 approx. He was a Shoemaker. This information can be checked out at  www.irishgenealogy.ie    You can also locate nli.ie records.

Thankyou Kaye Sullivan,

I have already got My Patrick Connells Death record as 26th November 1898.  buried, 30th November, 1898 at Glasnevin, and the informant was  My Grandmother Margaret Ryan nee Connell of Verschoyle Place. So this is him as the address was where she definetly lived.

So  far I believed her to be his (Patrick Connell )  only Child.

She used to tell me that she had an "Aunt" named Maryanne, who i am trying to trace. I was very young and have only memories of visiting this lady & her sister ??.   I was recently informed that the address was definetly behind a pub where the Hotel is now situated on Grand Canal street. Leitrim Place is on some of the old ordanance survey maps at this location. This informant is convinced that a Willy Byrne lived there also with his wife Bridgett. I have tried some of the directories but not been able to confirm names to date.

Edward C Smyth's pub was there until the 1980 when it was sold and replaced by Kitty O'Sheas in 1981.  Leitrim Place was a small lane beside it.  I used to occasioally drink in Smyths but I didn't know any of the families around
