Hi Paula
I’m Anne Mackay and I live in Brisbane.
My grandparents Robert Fraser and Alice Smith arrived in Australia in 1913. Alice (born Victoria Alice Maud Smith) was the youngest of three girls born to Elizabeth Cloney. Elizabeth’s mother was Margaret Knox of Walshestown born in 1815. Beyond Margaret I haven’t official documents to prove the actual family connections. Margaret married John Cloney, born in the Lusk Parish/District who became a shopkeeper and Clerk of Court in Swords. John Cloney’s parents I believe were Richard Cloney (spelt Clooney sometimes) and Ann(e) Knox.
The story that my mother had through other descendants of Margaret Knox who have remained in Ireland was that there was a James Knox born in the mid 1700s. He had two sons (possibly other children as well) who were James and Thomas. It is said that Margaret Knox was a daughter of James Knox and I think probably a younger sister of your Elizabeth Knox.
I understand that he mother of John Cloney was Ann Knox, daughter of Thomas.
So It looks like my great great grandmother Margaret Knox was a granddaughter of the 1750(ish) James Knox while her husband John Cloney, my great great grandfather, was a great grandson of the 1750(ish) James Knox.
I hope that makes sense to you.
However the crux of the matter is I think my great great grandmother Margaret Knox was the sister of Elizabeth Knox whose son, Alan Knox Buckley, according to your story, arrived in Australia in 1866.
Do you have any documents relating to the family? I found one document that relates to land in Walshestown that had been owned (or had been tenanted) by James and Thomas Knox. I’ll attach that for you. The document itself I didn’t quite understand but it does show that a James (not sure which generation) and Thomas using land in Walshestown which rather thrilled me when I found it.
I also found in some website that I can’t seem to find again a beautiful tombstone inscription for the wife of Thomas Knox. I’ll attach that too as although your relationship may not be as close as mine to Thomas, it is such a beautiful one I think everyone must be touched by it.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you again.
