I'm trying to find out information on my 4th Great Grandparents, Hamilton McMillan and Jane or Jannet Laird. They are buried in the cemetery at GreyAbbey. I believe they married about 1804 but I don't know if that was in Ireland or England, as I think Jane was born in Liverpool but can't find any further information to confirm this. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church, though obviously that wasn’t followed in every case. Around Greyabbey, the only church with records for the early 1800s is Greyabbey Church of Ireland. Their marriage records start in 1807. There’s a copy in PRONI in Belfast. If it was a Presbyterian service then neither of the 2 Presbyterian churches in Greyabbey has any marriage records before 1835. No easy way round that.
I looked at the Lairds in Co Down in the 1901 Irish census. The vast majority were Presbyterian (so pointing to Scottish origins, in the 1600s, in many cases).
