Patrick McCann and Family of Moneynebane, Dromara, County Down

DownDromara (Down)

Hello, I am relatively new at Irish genealogy. I just took some classes on it, and I am trying to find records for my ancestor Patrick McCann and his Wife, Mary McReavy (sp?) I am mostly looking for where they were buried. We believe they both would have been born around 1815-1820. and don't have any idea when they died. Someone added a date to the Family Search website that we can not verify for Mary McReavy of 5 April 1883.

The oldest child we have records of was Norah C McCann, born in 1835 and died in America in 1905. We have found Baptism records for most of their children in the Dromara Parish in the 1830-1850. So we know they were Catholics. It seems that half of their kids came to America and half stayed. We have some information on their son, Francis McCann, and daughters, Eliza Marmion and Kathrine Morgan, who were said to have remained in Ireland. These 3 who remained I don't have much information on.

When researching the area, mostly Roman Catholic cemeteries. I am not finding many McCanns buried at the cemeteries in Dromara. Yet on the Griffith Valuation, I am seeing multiple different McCanns in Moneynebane. Where would they have been buried if not in any cemetery in Dromara? I have been looking online and also at the FamilyHistory Library, where they are 22 volumes of Inscriptions of gravestones in Down County. I looked in Volume 19, which has Dromara cemeteries, and found only a few McCanns.

Can you please help me know where I can look next?

Here’s Elizabeth McCann’s marriage in 1869 which places her in Moneynabane. Catherine was a witness.

Catherine McCann’s mariage in 1879.

A witness was Terence McCann. Possibly this man whose probate abstract is on the PRONI wills site, and perhaps her brother:

McCann Terence of Moneynabane county Down farmer died 28 September 1921 Administration Belfast 16 October to Elizabeth McCann widow. Effects £170 15s.

There’s a possible death for Pat McCann registered in Banbridge on 6th July 1866 aged 55. That’s pay to view on the GRONI site for £2.50.

Possible death for Mary in 1900. Farmer’s widow aged 89. Informant was daughter in law Elizabeth McCann

Here’s Terence’s marriage to Elizabeth Rogan in 1884. His father Patrick was dead by that year. A couple of McArearys were witnesses.

Catherine married Michael Morgan. This looks to be her in 1901 & 1911:

Eliza married Daniel Marmion. This looks to be that family in 1901 & 1911:

Probate abstract for their son:

Marmion Daniel of Drinn Dromara county Down farmer died 3 April 1941 Probate Belfast 5 October to Mary Alice Marmion the widow and Bernard McMullan farmer. Effects £869 15s.

According to the UHF website, the only RC graveyard in Dromara civil parish is Finnis. So the family might be buried there. I have no idea if those gravestones have been transcribed. However according to the parish website, prior to 1820, some parishioners used to use the graveyard at St John’s, Dromara.

Catholic churches rarely kept burial records so if there’s no gravestone you’ll probably struggle to find their graves.
