McAlinden’s in Ballynahinch, Co Down

Down

My great grandparents, Patrick and Eliza (nee Hutton) were married in the Ballynahinch Catholic Church on 31 Oct 1847. Patrick’s surname appears as McLinden. They had 5 children in Ireland; Henry, Eliza, William, Margaret and Patrick Jr. They lived in Magheradrool.

According to Ros Davies, Patrick was a Publican on Main St in Ballynahinch. In 1863 they emigrated to Troy, NY. David was born in England prior to boarding the Bridgewater for NYC. My grandfather, Samuel was born in Troy.

I have not been able to find Patrick’s or Eliza’s parents nor any siblings they may have had.

I know there are McAlinden’s in the Newry area. I have not been able to make any connection between the two areas.

Any help in locating names will be greatly appreciated.

We will be in County Down later this summer. I would be honored to meet any relatives. TIA

David,

Per RootsIreland (paid subscription) they had the following children in Ballynahinch- Henry 1848, Elizabeth 1850, William 1852, Mary 1854, Patrick 1856 Sponsors with family names- Mary McAlinden and William Hutton. There were various spellings for the family's surname- McLinden, Linden, McLenden, McLunden. I checked on Ancestry there were a few trees but all were private.

McAlinden is a fairly common name in Co Down as you will have observed from Ros Davies’ website. In the 1901 census of the county there were around 200 scattered across the county.

Difficult to help with your family. I note that one of the sponsors for Margaret’s baptism in 1854 was a Mary McAlinden, so presumably a relative but what the relationship was, we don’t know. Nor where she lived.

Magheradrool’s baptism records start in 1827 and marriages in 1829. Getting back before that will be challenging.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about the family. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results for no fee.

The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project and can offer FTDNA testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).
