Mary Relly B 1805 est.

Down

Hi

My research has led me to a Mary Relly born in County Down around 1805. It's my first post in this group as we unfortunately assumed it was either a spelling mistake or an interpretation by the census taker and should have been Reilly. Mary Relly was either connected to the police through her father as she married Edward Haddican from Bekan in County Mayo. Again, we have been sent some details that Haddicans father was a policeman who worked in the North.

Another odd piece of information is that in Family Search she's connected to Mary Byrne who in some instances is connected to Edward Haddican. Either she's a sister or she remarried after marrying a Byrne.

She moved to Derbyshire around 1840-50

Many thanks

I am slightly confused. You say that Mary Relly married Edward Haddican. Yet the 1891 census you have posted gives her widowed surname as Relly. Surely it should be Haddican?

Hi Elwyn. Thank you for the reply. It's yet another confusing issue. The Haddican family all originate from the Glenamaddy/Bekan area but Mary Relly (sometimes Mary Byrne!) is on a census record as being born in County Down. Her husband Edward Haddican died in the workhouse after what would be called a "characterful" life! The questions I need to find at this end are why she changed her name to Relly which could possibly be her maiden name, and maybe she married a Byrne before Edward Haddican? Her son kept the Haddican name so it possibly wasn't all bad. The only knowledge we have is that Mary Relly was born in County Down and ended up living with her son in Derbyshire? It's yet another confusing issue with the census.

Casimir,

You probably already have, per RootsIreland (paid subscription), children born to Edward Haddican and Mary Bryne in Bekan- Bridget 1833, Edmond 1835, Catherine 1841.

Hi Mary TV. Thank you for the reply. Yes, I had a subscription with Roots and have the Baptism details for Bridget Edmond (Edward) and Catherine. They moved to Bradford and I have them on a Census in 1851. Bridget is recorded as being 17. There is no record of them prior to this. They then moved to Derbyshire possibly for quarry work or Railways. Mary Byrne is sometimes Moyne on records. The only connection so far is that they seem to have connections to Grogan/Groghan and Flynn/Finn as sponsors. I've been told that records are poor for Bekan. The Haddican name is very local to Bekan, Glenamaddy, Tuam so connections must be around that area. I'm in the process of listing every Haddican I can find. I had a message through another borad from the US with a connection to McGreal in Ballyhaunis. My other side of the family are Gleeson who married in Ballyhaunis so I'm in the right area. It's just linking it up!!!
