Jacksons from Loughbrickland Down

Down

Greetings from NSW Australia

This is my first time messaging here. I'm hoping for assistance finding our more about my Jackson ancestors from Down. My 2X great-grandfather was Robert Jackson born 28 March 1867 in Loughbrickland, Down and died 2 March 1953 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was Hugh Jackson (name from Robert's marriage record), but I know no further details. Robert's brother John Jackson was born on 22 January 1869 in Derrydrummuck, Down. He may have migrated to the US. Another brother Samuel was born on 31 December 1870 in Drummuck. I have found a Samuel Jackson living in Loughbrickland in 1912. I would be grateful for any suggestions/comments. Thank you.

Barbara,

Thomas & Sarah married in 1860 in Banbridge Register Office.

Statutory birth registration started in Ireland on 1.1.1864. According to the GRONI site, children born after that date appear to be:

Mary 31.12.1864. Probably died 17.8.1866

Robert 28.3.1867

John 22.1.1869

Samuel 31.12.1870

Mary 23.2.1874

There may have been other children born before 1864 but they won’t have birth certificates. You might find them in a church baptism record if you know what church they attended. Do you know what denomination the Jackson family were? If Church of Ireland, Aghaderg baptism records start in 1814; if Presbyterian there are 3 churches nearby of which Glascar has a gap in its baptism records between 1844 and 1885; Loughbrickland has baptism records from 1842 and Scarva baptisms from 1807. Copies of all those records are held in PRONI in Belfast.

Can’t see Sarah Jackson’s death but she was evidently still alive in 1895 when Robert married.

Thank you Elwyn, though I must apologise for not including enough detail in my question. I already knew those dates of birth and the marriage date. What I really want to find out, if possible, are details of his father Hugh and his brothers John and Samuel and daughter Mary. I know nothing of Hugh other than his name. And I know only the dates of birth for the three surviving siblings. Kind regards, Barbara

Barbara,

There are trees on Ancestry that show Thomas born in Bessbrook, Co Armagh c 1832. Have you searched for his baptism, and that of any siblings? (Bessbrook is in the parish of Killevy. Copies of the surviving baptism records for that parish are in PRONI).

As far as tracing Hugh and earlier generations, death registration only started in 1864 so if he died before that it may be challenging. There may be no death records to search. Only the Church of Ireland generally kept burial records. Labourers moved around a bit to follow available work so that doesn’t help either. They rarely had gravestones as they often couldn’t afford one. A lot of Irish research comes to a stop around 1800 due to the lack of earlier records.

Possible death of John Lindsay in 1880:
