First time posting - hello everyone! :)

Hi there,

I hope that you might be able to help me out with myfamily tree research, based in the Killyleagh, Shrigley area.

My family name is McCreedy and my grandfather was called John, who was a sailor and away for most of the time. He married Jane Lundy, also from the Shrigley area and went on to have 5 sons, calledJohn Patrick (aka Sean) - Leo - Tony and the twins, Cyril & Hugh. I'm trying to find out anything at all about John, as although we know that he was born in 1884 - we do not know the location .

John's mother was, I believe, called MARGARET and we think that there is a good chance that after herhusband died (HUGH) - Margaret re-married a guy called JAMES CHARTERS. Margaret had McCreedy children already but after marrying James Charters, she went on to have some more children and this is why we think that the McCreedy/Charters families are linked. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, we are also trying to find out about John Patrick (AKASean) as we can find no record of his death. We believe that he suffered from TB and died in Forster Green, but can't confirm this.

We are really stuck now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Civil Parish of Killyleagh, as you know, is in Co Down. The link below shows you where it is situated and its location in relation to other parishes in the county.

The Church of Ireland Records for Killyleagh begin in 1830, while the Roman Catholic parish records for Kilmore/Crossgar (the corresponding Catholic parish) begin in 1896, as you can see below.

As this is the case, you will have some difficulty finding any church records about John, as you think he was born before that 1896 stating point. You could try searching the records of the Ulster Historical Foundation for your ancestor?s siblings, on the basis that birth details are not always accurate, as many people couldn?t read or write at that time.

On a better note, as John was, you think, born in 1884 there should be a civil record of his birth. Civil registration generally began in Ireland in 1864. As this is the case, you could try searching www.rootsireland,ie (a subscription site) and/or www.familysearch.org for the civil records of your ancestors. Information from civil records generally allows you to gather information about a previous generation as birth records, for example list parent?s names. The Ulster Historical Foundation may also be able to assist you in a graveyard search.
