William B. Flanagan (~1830-1893) or Catherine Kelley (1838-1923)

Killinchy (Down)

I am trying to find the origins of my wife's great grandparents. I don't believe they were married in Ireland. They both emigrated to New York and had their first child in 1866. The closest I have to documentation is that William was baptized In Killinchy on 23 Aug 1829. (Though he used 1830 on all census in the USA.) His parents there were listed as William and Jane Flanagan. I have nothing on Catherine at all. It is a very common name. She was consistent in posting her birth date as 20 May 1838. I can't even find an actual marriage license in New York, but they had 2 children in NYC before moving to Iowa. The 1870 Iowa census shows a "Martin Flanagan" (born 1845) living with them but he isn't a child of them. I have access to resources and files, but the commonality of the names stumps me. Any direction would be appreciated.

Janice,

Have you found or requested from the State of Iowa William and Catherine's death certificates? They often include parent names and where they are from.

Records from Ancestry

There was a Martin Flangan who married Ellen Fanning. They raised their family in Lynn Grove, Iowa before moving to Calhoun,

I did not find Martin's baptismal record but found some of his siblings on RootsIreland. They were Roman Catholic and their father's name was Eugene which is interchangeable with the name Owen.

Janice,

Per Catherine's death certificate her father's name was Ed Kelly.

Note- William's baptismal record shows he was baptized in the Church of Ireland. William and Catherine are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery which is Catholic.

Hi,

What documentation do you have for William's birth beyond the baptismal record you have referenced. His death certificate might confirm his parents' names. Has your wife taken a DNA test to see if she has a connection with Martin's family?

Regards- Mary

I have ordered a death certificate just this week from the State of Iowa. Should be 1 to 3 weeks. A problem may be: he died in a mental hospital in Mt. Pleasant Iowa. Means the records are very protected, but they thought the death certificate might be available. Yes we have Catherine's death certificate, but it only says her birth of May 20, 1838. I will report back when I find more. Thank you for all your help!

I have no news as far as my wife's direct ancestors, which we think are actually from County Down. The death certificate for Catherine lists only Ireland as her birth and William B's was even less informative.I will pursue those however I can.

I did get an obituary of a Martin Flanagan 1877-1897, from Cloonshreve and buried in Kilcooly. It doesn't list parents' names or brothers or sisters, but it says they are still living.I will look at Billiongraves or other sites to see if this is a relative of the Martin Flanagan {1846-1928} from County Roscommon that emigrated to Iowa. He lived with William and Catherine for a time in Iowa so we think he is related. I like the online interaction I see in Roscommon so I am kinda hoping her relatives originated from there.
