Ann Coburn 1818 - 1888

DownDown (Down)

Using Canadian Census data, Ann Coburn was born in County Down, Ireland in 1818. Ann married Thomas Miskimmon (Miskiman) born in County Antrim, Ireland. Canadian census data gives Thomas's birth year as 1813.

They had their first son John Alexander Miskiman in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland in 1837. Thomas and Ann's daughter Mary Ann was born in Canada in 1846, which means that they immigrated sometime between the 2 births.

Canadian census data from 1860 on details the entire family until the ends of their lives in Canada. Ann maintains her maiden name Coburn throughout. For more details, see www.findagrave.com  Find A Grave Memorial# 26760106

We would appreciate any help to find Thomas, Ann and John in Ireland and then on the boat to Canada.Ann's mother's name may be Catherine O'Brian.

Thank you from a 2nd great granddaughter.

Hi,

The Irish genealogy toolkit http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html will help guide you in your search.

They have excellent articles and tips to finding your way in Irish records. The records are divided, to a lot of different areas for certain dates, religions, areas, so the guide is quite helpful.

Another site I found useful is http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/  there is a lot to be gleaned from their free offerings such as areas the name was associated with, variations in spellings, just try using a variant. This site will help. http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Miskimmon

This link by Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild will help to locate their ship http://immigrantships.net/newcompass/pcindex.html

ISTG also has a help guide to assist. http://immigrantships.net/newcompass/imnat/imm_nat.html

Trying to identify possible family left behind might help due to the unusual name. The Griffiths Valuation was published between 1847 and 1864,  so would not identify your 2xg grandfather, but might give leads for parish or township. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch

Any place name you are unsure of can be checked at the irishtimes website and it will give you identifications right down to street names .

Good luck on your search! Jeanette
