Visiting Lower Cruit, Donegal to look for McFadden ancestor's home.

Templecrone (Donegal)

I am coming to Ireland and will visit Lower Cruit on 5th June and have looked up Griffiths Valuation for 1857 showing who was where at that time. My ancestor, Thomas McFadden was listed on Lower Cruit, but I cannot find the location of his holding on the maps. Sorry that the photos are not the best but hurrying to get packed!

Does anyone know where I could find out this or any further information?

It looks to me to be property 1o which I would say is next to properties 1m & 1n on the map. The “o” has been corrupted or badly written as “6”. The properties in that townland are numbered from 1a at the bottom towards 1p nearer the top. So 1”6” is in the right area for 1o.

Many thanks. That is really helpful! Just the information I needed!

I have looked at the map again, but there are the letters l, m and n all close together, but I can find nothing that looks like a 6. ‘P’ is further up and what looks like No18 further down, all written in red.

I wondered if the l was an O written badly. My guess is that’s where O was though. (The property is probably long gone now though).

The ‘l’ does look pretty clearly like an L and would make sense being next to ‘m’ and ‘n’. ‘P’ is directly above them both so I cannot see where there might be the missing ‘O’.

I am sorry but I can’t help you pinpoint it any closer. Common sense seems to suggest that O must have been close to that Traglass area. Maybe it got missed by the person compiling the maps in the 1860s or thereabouts?

Judging by the satellite view, there looks to be a house that may still be occupied in the l,m, n Traglass group. You could ask there if anyone knows of other former homes in the immediate area. Presumably not beyond P which is fairly easy to see. There are a couple of patches of green grass near Traglass beach which might once have had houses on them. A local might know.
