Hello, please can anyone help me? I am searching for information about my late mother Anne Maria Kelly. I have been trying for many years and my search has led me to here. My mother was born in Liverpool in 1936 but ended up in Ireland and was brought up as a child in Ireland but could never remember exactly where. Please can anyone give me any information where I can find out if she was in a workhouse in Stranorlar? Thank you.

Can you provide any additional info on your mother. Did she stay in Ireland? When, where, to whom did she marry? When and where did she die? Did her parents bring her to Ireland? Do you have official marriage and death certificates that might have her parents' names?

Stranorlar Workhouse ceased to be a workhouse after 1921. After that it was re-designated as the County Home and used to accommodate the elderly, infirm, single mothers and their children and those with physical and mental disabilities. Not sure what records may exist of folk there in the 1930s and 1940s, nor if they are open to the public (being within the past 100 years). Try Donegal County Record Office (details on this link):
