The Gillespies

Donegal

I am visiting Donegal this June, hoping to track down information on the family of my Great Grandfather, Dominick Gillespie (1826 - 1897), oldest son of Cornelius Gillespie and Grace Doherty. I would love to hear from any modern day descendants of this family line. Perhaps someone from the line of Patrick Gillespie and Annie Doogan.

Graham:

Who was the wife of Dominick Gillespie? I could not locate a civil death record for Dominick around 1897.

Dominick Gillespie was in the army for many years before moving to Scotland where he married Catherine McGregor in Crieff in 1863. They had 4 children before moving down south to Norwich, Norfolk. He died in 1897 in Norwich.

Very hard to find RC records pre-1850. I just checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and no Dominick Gillespie baptismal records around 1826.

Graham,

The 1863 Scottish marriage certificate may help a little bit. It should tell you whether Dominick’s parents were alive or dead at that date. Scottish authorities were pretty meticulous about that. If dead it will say (dcd) after their name(s). If alive, that annotation won’t be there.

Death registration started in Ireland in 1864 so knowing whether each of the parents was alive in 1863 should help a search for them 1864 onwards. (If they were both dead by 1863, finding them in Ireland will be challenging).

The 1863 marriage certificate should also say what Dominick’s father’s occupation was. That would be helpful information too.
