Researching Michael McDevitt (McDaid) family information in Donegal

Donegal

Hi everyone,

I will be visiting Co. Donegal in August 2024 and have been researching my 3rd G. Grandfather Michael McDevitt. Year of his birth is approximately 1825 and his father was James McDevitt .

I have hit a wall with where in Co. Donegal he was from and can't find any record of siblings, parish etc. He arrived in Boston, USA around 1844 and married Ellen Farran also from Co. Donegal(father Henry Farran).

This is not much information to go on but I'm hopeful someone might have information.

Thank you!

Jennifer:

McDevitt/Devitt was/is a very common surname in Co. Donegal. The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows over 400 households were headed by a McDevitt/Devitt. The surname was found in many parishes but Inishkeel and Convoy appear to have the most McDevitts.

The main problem researching ancestors in Donegal is the lack of pre-1850 RC parish records. For whatever reason, the parish register books were not retained before 1850 in almost all the RC parishes in Donegal.

Have you taken a DNA test?

Hi Roger,

Thank you for your response and yes, it seems that there is no record of a Michael McDevitt or any other variation of our last name. There is a James born 1775 that I'm looking into as possibly Michael's father in the 2 parishes you suggested.

I have taken a DNA test thru Ancestry and there are 2 distant cousins that have the same problem finding any more information with this branch.

Hi Jennifer, I too am researching the McDevitts in Co. Donegal.  If you can compare your GEDMatch DNA Kit with mine, we might have some matches. The information that I have may be of interest to you. My kit is AH9559483, through Ancestry also.  What is the name on your kit?

My 2nd gr grandmother, Catherine Kate McDevitt, 1845- 13 Mar 1922 was born in Meenmore East, near Fintown.  Her father was Daniel McDevitt, b.1820 in Meenabrock.  He had a brother Patrick McDevitt, 1828-1878, born in Meenmore East.  In 1847 in Griffiths Valuation, Daniel and Patrick are listed with their father, Connell McDevitt 1800-1883 as working 139 acres together. The quality of this land was third - not very great land. James Hamilton was the landlord.

Age-wise, your Michael McDevitt could be a brother to Daniel and Patrick. The fact that he was in Boston by 1844 could account for the fact that he was not included with his family in Griffiths Valuation in 1847.

I also have a DNA match with someone who's relative was James McDade, 1830-1905, who migrated to Allentown, PA. Another potential relative.

My daughter and I are going to Ireland next June. Please let me know, especially if we have a DNA match.

Roger McDonnell: Please share any insights, comments or questions about anything I've shared.
