O'Donnell

Donegal

Does anyone have a connection to Hugh, Alice & Sarah O'Donnell, born around 1800's. Hugh's children were Jane, Richard and Ellen. Believed to have been born in Glenties, Donegal. Catholic religion. Or could anyone sugguest where I coulld look for information. Tried census records, but had no success. Thank you

Co. Donegal is a difficult county to research particularly with pre-1850 records. Very few RC parishes have records starting before 1850 and some like Glenties have records starting in the 1860s and 1870s.

Civil registration started in 1864.

You indicate 1800s but can you be more specific and did Hugh marry Alice or Sarah or were they sisters to Hugh?

Have you considered DNA testing?

Thank you for your reply Rodger

I can go back to Hugh born 1778, married to Mary ? Hugh had a half brother John (no date)

Hugh & Marys children Sarah 1798, Hugh 1801, Alice 1808

John (no wife added) had a son Hugh 1810, married to Catherine McNeill. If there are other children, I dont know them

I guess I am just curious to see if there is any more information about this family recorded anywhere

I have my DNA done. This is how we found Hugh & Mary and could match our DNA with this family

I joined the oOdonnell Clan 20plus years ago, follow the facebook site, joined the DNA swection & have 17 matches

lasttime I looked. I have contacted some that I thought might be a link, but we can see how we match yet

Cheers

Ann:

I looked at the Tithe Applotment listings from the 1820s https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp  There were 15 Hugh Donnell records and two Hugh O'Donnell records. None of the records were in the civil parish of Inishkeel where Glenties is located. If you look at the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing from 1857 there are many O'Donnell records in Inishkeel parish including a number of Hugh records. I assume your Hugh was dead by then.

FYI I also have an O'Donnell gr-gr-grandmother but she lived in northeast Donegal near the town of Lifford.

All the best!
